Description After a lot of deliberation, and almost a 2-week delay in posting, I have finally come to a peace with posting this.

This is almost half a year old now, and my very first piece in Pyrography. Usually, for first pieces I try something simple and not as profound since I am trying to work a feel for the new medium. However, this was an image I was dying to do and an idea I had to get out of me, and I wanted to do it in pyrography as it seemed just to fit the medium.

I have never had a father in my life. Ever. I have no regrets that I didn’t; my mother was truly there for us in every single which way possible, and I never felt in lacking of something. However, that never put my mind to cease thinking and wondering about all those people out there that DO have fathers. It must be very different then something I have experienced, and honestly, I wouldn’t know where to begin.

I am a storyteller by nature. My lure to visual arts and crafts is a means for myself to express everything that I am and feel, and so naturally I get attached to characters or archetypes that bear meaning, resemblance, intrigue, or some sort of relevance to me. In this image, it pertains to the character, which I drew out.

There have only been 2 “father” characters that I have ever “loved”, and truly believe that they stand as a symbol of what fatherhood, or just plain being HUMAN means (ironically, non of them ARE human… must say something about the role now-a-days eh?): “Mufasa” from “The Lion King”, and “Inunotaishou” (or “Inupapa”, or “Papa-sama” and sometimes even “Touga” as he’s called) from “Inuyasha”.
Sensitive, playful, strong, compassionate, fedelic, protective, and wise (equality is in there as well, however that goes without saying).

The Box I worked on for about 2 days on and off. And even though there are errors on it- “imperfections” if you will- I think it’s spot on. The design symbolizes what I think are the true values and worth of a man, and the beast which resembles a Canid- which is my born guardian- and it’s a pale flesh tone color- almost pink- which is just as a masculine color as any other, even the stereotypical “blue for boys”.
And the imperfections? Well, I think that that too is what being a good human is all about- our ability to err. No one is perfect, no one is capable of understanding it all. And in that is how we (as living creatures) are perfect. We are a balance, NOT an extreme.

The box also features Papa’s 3 swords: On the right Tetsuiga, on the left Tensuiga, and in the middle Souunga.

Boxes like this are open for commission as well. I have an array of boxes and size and can to any style.
A Box like this (measures 8”X6”) with this amount of work (including front and side icons) would be $95. Prices get cheaper as box size gets smaller and/or design is simpler.

Let me check to see if it's in my stock, or I sold it. I think it is actually, but I don't want to promise anything until I do.
If you are interested in purchasing it, please send me a note so that I can put it aside for you.

I don't burn boxes before I get a commissions to do one, so right now, I have a bunch of empty boxes waiting for anything to be burnt onto them!

Wow even your first pyrography is amazing.

I got a wood burning pen yesterday because I find your boxes inspiring and I love trying out new mediums and I have also always loved fire.

But my first one looks like crap that some 3 year old made. I think I was using the wrong end piece and will be experimenting more soon. After reading about it more and looking at your pics I know I was burning to much and that was my problem. I just need more practice.

The most common mistake it to press down hoard and hop that the burn will make one obvious black line. What you get instead it what looks like a "dot to dot" image with deep dot groves. The trick is to wait for the pen to heat up (leave is to warm up until it's hot), and then delicately run over the surface multiple times. For areas where you want a shadow, work in small circles to achieve a pointalism effect. XD

what is it exactly that you do to the box? is it carved in or something else? I love learning how to do new things i've never done before (I just resently learned how to etch glass, now i'm trying to figure out how to make my own stencils for it) So i'm very interested in learning how to do this. I'm studying to be an art therapist, if this is something that can be done somewhat safely it might give me some ideas for projects that my future patients can do ^_^

Hello there!
Strait off the bat I can tell you this- this is NOT a good art therapy. It deals with using utenciles that heat up to apoorx. 200-250 degrees and are swealtering hot! Ahy mishandeling can lead to SERIOUS burning! I've knicked myself twice just barely and sported quite the soar burns as a result!

Pyrography is primeirly what the name means- designs with fire. You literally have to burn the wood inorder to get the design. Some more advanced artists go as far as using blowtoarches and other equipement to get a level of insane work, and it's very rewarding! Others- like me- stick to the basics (I admit, I am still weary of the giant blowtoarch) and have a pyrography pen that heats up to about 250 degrees, and is used to burn the image into a surface- sometimes, multiple pases are required to get a darker tone/shade if desired.

While not art therapy material, it is really somewhat of a rush doing it, and you really get a unique piece of work after!

Wow, I'm thrilled to see such lovely fanart in Artisan Crafts. It's beautiful.

This especially intrigues me because my husband ~sumsquared makes custom boxes and a few times people have asked for pictures on them (nothing so elaborate as yours - just little simple things like beehives), which he asked me to figure out how to do since he only does technical drawing. I was going to try etching with something sharp, rubbing with colored wood pencil and then sanding to get rid of the roughness. But maybe I should try this - I didn't realize woodburning equipment had gotten so nice. I remembered the big clunky thing with one heavy tip we had when I was a kid and dismissed it as not being suitable.

Do you finish the wood with anything when you're done with the artwork? ~sumsquared uses wax and I'm afraid it might blur things.

Gishkishenh In reply to senoritafish [2006-08-12 18:08:48 +0000 UTC]

Ha! No prob, crazy emot cons!

Well, actually, the equipement is still very clunky and chunky.. and watch out, burning yourself is a mandetory. XD
I don't finish the wood with anything becuase I cannot find a finish that doesn't remin sticky after applied. That, and some of the boxes (like this one) are pale in color, and the finish makes it look bad. Darker colors are great for that though. XD

senoritafish In reply to Gishkishenh [2006-08-12 23:27:25 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, after a google search it looks like there's a vast improvement over the one we used to have. It was a about the size and shape of a heavy flathead screwdriver. Would you mind if I ask what kind you use? And do you make the boxes as well?

The wax finish ~sumsquared uses isn't sticky at all once it's dry. However, the wood has to be sanded and buffed really smooth first before you apply it, let it absorb, then sand and buff again for a satin finish. Sometimes he repeat the process 2-3 times; it makes for a box that feels really nice in your hands, but I'm wondering it's compatible with adding the artwork? Seems like one process will ruin the other. I guess I won't know till I try...

I know what you mean about finishes making it look different; it would be if something existed that didn't change the orginal, dry color of the wood too much, because it looks nice just as it is. However, without it, I'd be a little worried about the wood absorbing oils from your hands from normal usage.

One more thing before I scare you by babbling too much - are you aware of ? I bet they'd love to have you!

Hello there!
Honestly, I could tell you what I have.. but I'm not at home at the moment. I'm all the way across the country, and won't be back until the end of the month. XD
Sometimes I amke the boxes, and other times a friend will give me one he/she has made. It all depends on what is going on at the time I want to craft (i.e. sometimes I am just etching to burn stuff up, so I don't want the extra time wasted on making the box, others I want a complete beginning to end ordeal).

The Pyrography isn't like paint. Since the wood is burned, it won't fade... the wood won't heal itself or anything, it's pretty much a permanent stain.. so if the box wears with time, so does the image, and they all go together in a timely fassion... so it's as if the entire shmere is consistant, and never waviers. The pyrography- if done correctly- is smooth on the surface- like this box. It's not one of those deeply burnt mass prduced ones that iconify/silhouette the charcater, but you could easily run your hand over the top and it's still smooth.
Waxing a box like this was never a prob for me, other than the wax was just sticky afterwards. And yes, the changing of the tint. Traditionally, I try not to wax the boxes either becuase most native boxes are NOT waxed, and part of the charm is the unique color and pattern they get from aging on thier own. In a case like this, I have just been so used to using the original box color and grain (with a little bit of forshadowing knowladge of how the color and grain will affect the box in the future) as part of the artistic charcater. This is a pine wood box, so in a few years it can either get rosey pale, or yellow contrast depending on the humidity, and what inscence I'll burn around it. Either way, it's going to add either a warm rosey feel/charm to the charcater, or imbody him in what looks like a gold finish.
And don't you worry about tlaking to me for as long as you want! I enjoy the conversaiton!

Hey.. that might be a good club to join!! I'll do that!
