Description EDIT 2:New and updated Paint Tool SAI link has been added. The fur tutorial is ancient, but if it helps you, then super (:
EDIT: Wow, firstly, I never thought that this would be my most popular deviation It's something I just slapped together. But I am glad that it's helping some of you. I'm including a link to go and get a free Paint Tool SAI download for those who wish to try out the program:
www.mediafire.com/file/uda37qr…This is nothing super fancy and fabulous, just a quick little thing I put together because i am frequently asked of how I do fur in Paint Tool SAI. Now, I am not saying this is the right/proper way to do it, because I'm sure there are a million different ways to do it, but this is what works for me.

1. The "base layer". Basically, base colour of whatever it is you are drawing. In this case, we'll say a gray furry thing.
2. The Water tool. Brush strokes. Start at the 'bottom' of the fur, and then overlay it and go to the top of it. In this case, I started at the right and worked left so my start of fur overlays other fur clumps, giving it the 'fur' appeal. Also, throw in some little fur clump-starts randomly. If you follow the overlay pattern strictly, it makes your fur look too uniform and not as realistic.
3. Add a lighter tone/highlight to your fur with a smaller size setting of the Water tool. Same with overlay, but do not cover all fur clump-starts. Just the part where your imaginary light source would be hitting along with the bits that of course will be lighter as it is visible and not hiding beneath other fur. Again throw some little highlights around.
4. Add final highlights with brighter colour and smaller size setting with Water tool. Whence finished, make the size smaller to where you will get little "individual strands" of hair/fur. Use these as final highlights and throw them around to make your fur blend right together and not look like poofy triangles. ta-da! Furrrrr.

Guys, don't stick to this religiously. Use it, study it, experiment, and see what works for you!

I downloaded this verion of sai, but when i got on it, my tablet refused to work with it. The mouse froze unless i used an actual mouse. Is there anything that can be done to fix it?

VarDagi In reply to Nalanithewolf [2017-07-09 02:18:36 +0000 UTC]

This happened to me too, there's a way to fix it. I had this problem for a few months and I thought it was the pen, but it isn't. I looked it up (something I should have done before buying a new pen, cause neither pens worked) and found a link that helped me.Β  Β  Β  Β  First, make sure you have all your tablet's software (and SAI's needed drivers) installed.Β  It took some work to fix but it worked for me, and I hope it works for you ^^

I really have no idea. You may need to check your stylus optimization and sensitivity. Or make sure that the program is compatible with the type of computer you have.

Change your Pen Sensitivity, and make sure the "Min" on your Brush settings in SAI is on 0%. If the change in your pen sensitivity isn't working, then uninstall and reinstall the driver for your tablet. Often, especially if it is a Wacom product, you can go to the company website and download the driver from there for your specific tablet.

Play around with things until you get what you want; you don't have to follow tutorials religiously.

is the SAI download really legal? cause i got it from your link but there doesnt seem to be any sign of it being a demo version and im pretty sure you have to buy it if you go to the developer's website. Not entirely sure though; so thats why im asking.

Truly, there's no telling. I was given this link years ago and it's what I've used, so I thought I'd share it for those who can't necessarily afford an art program at the moment and wanted SAI.

The water tool such as watercolor right? And do we make a new layer for each step or is it all on one layer?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GoblinCatVel In reply to VynntageEquestrian [2016-02-11 04:51:02 +0000 UTC]

I would guess so, as it just says Water tool, and I believe 1 was one layer, 2 was second layer, and 3 and four were another, but I may be wrong. It should say in description. Honestly this is very old and I no longer utilize it as an accurate representation of how I do fur, but simply do what works for you

I really just need the brushes. ;; I can only use programs for Android, and I just found one that allows custom brush uploads...But I can't seem to find any good fur brushes. I'm mainly looking for like a cell-shading brush, or a brush like this one.

For cell-shading, use the Pen tool; it works wonderfully.

You can google tablet drivers and download the one appropriate for your tablet. This will fix pressure sensitivity.
