Description At last, it's done. I poured my heart and soul over the last week to finish this piece, and not settle halfway like I usually do. I'd drawn all the characters (save for Goma) separately and layered them individually in Paint, then whited out the various overlaps.

The coloring first began as a normal, light-to-dark gradient, without any hard black shadows. However, I played around with coloring the larger patches of dark color pure black, and after shopping it around to a few people, they all seemed to find the hard shadows more interesting. As I revised the shadows on the existing characters I decided to add a pervading purple glow beneath, something I feel added a lot more dimension.

By the time I finished coloring Ito I didn't even feel like drawing Goma, let alone her giant robot (thanks to ~Rakugaki-otoko for the design), but over several sleepless nights - including this one - I pushed myself to add everything I'd imagined. Was it worth it? You decide, but in the words of DJ Kariu, "if you don't like it: fuck you. I'm serious, homie, kiss my ass."

I can't remember- did I draw the kitty face on the mech, or did you add that in later?

You did. In hindsight, I should have just gone with the bubble-tank Stepper, instead of mooching yet another design.

haha- you didn't mooch anything, man. Your mechanical designs are awesome, though, now that I remember. Those tanks and dirigibles, mmm. You ought to draw more of that stuff sometime.

Awesome work!
Would you usually draw each character separately in a piece like this? Is that more convenient?

It's the same way I drew the Mad Bull 34 picture. In fact, I think I have a backup from when I first drew each of them: [link]

The only downfall is that doing it like that means the characters can't convincingly interact or be in physical contact; for that, I suggest the traditional route of featureless outline figures.

With a primitive program like Paint that can't handle transparency, moving individual characters into place is a huge bitch. However, it's more practice than anything else, as drawing them together from the start might mean I'd lazily obscure limbs or objects I'm not good at drawing.

Oh, cool. I always like seeing work in progress!
But yeah, that would be true for contact. and I could see the issue in Paint, I remember dealing with that kind of problem before, albeit I was in like 3rd grade...
I actually would like to use Paint again for its simplicity, but I have a mac now, and I don't really know how to get that on there.
Thanks for the insight!

Thanks! I've tried maintaining palette discipline even when I'm drawing on such a large scale.

I don't really know what to say about this one! It's awesome! Looks so legitimate, yo. I don't know if it's my lack of sleep or what, but it reminds me of Snatcher for some reason. Coloring's great. Shading's great. Lineart's great. Everything's great!

Hehe, thanks, and go get some rest! Thanks for the feedback on the shadows, by the way. I wanted to show you Goma really badly last night because she turned out so well (the solid corner that forms her nose was a complete accident), but traditionally, showing someone a work in progress diminishes my drive to finish it. I had to shrink her head after it turned out bigger than the rest of the characters', though.

Pixel work in Paint is quite an affair; I'm amazed how many Undos are allowed, and I have about five in-progress copies of this pic on my desktop. Still have to resort to Game Maker for transparencies of course.

Goma turned out pretty nicely, yo! I'm proud of you. The accidental nose corner looks pretty nice, and it's one of those flukes in pixel art that you can't really plan, but it works out, you know?
question: if the four foreground characters are the 4 suites, what is Goma, if anything? Just curious, since I noticed that detail on their clothing. NICE job on that mecha, by the way!

About ms Paint, yeah, there can be so many undos. It's pretty liberating, really. Muro only allows 6, and it's like you have to be extra careful. I'm the same way with transparencies as well. Gotta use that gamemaker.
