Description 's contest prize for Tower of Heaven, a Game Boy rendition of the NES game "Guardic Gaiden: The Guardian Legend".

It's about a girl who can shoot lasers and transform into a space jet that also shoots lasers; the game itself alternates between vertical shoot-em-up portions and top-down action/exploration levels; given its age, it's surprisingly vast and amibitious for its time, with multiple environments on various planets for both gameplay formats. However, I must admit that the enemy designs are extremely uninspired, such as "strobe-light hockey puck" or "tentacles in a shell", which made this piece rather difficult.

This game needs to be re-done properly.

This is pretty awesome. If they had made a game boy game for this, I would have bought it.

Whoo, yeah. Actually, the original game's so primitive it could have easily fit into a Game Boy cartridge.

This isn't the original title screen... is it?

Oh, no; the original title screen was some eyeball machine in space, it didn't reflect the game at all.

Actually, the title screen shows Naju, the planet you are on during the game.

Ahaha, how could I have missed that. Honestly, I wasn't aware the game had a story at all.

Well, it's a relatively brief plot line, but it offers enough gameplay to make up for it

I keep thinking I am missing something. (cute art BTW) I see the comments, and the pic and I see the various descriptive things, so I get confused as to whether the pic above is just that. Fanart, essentially. I've played the old NES game into the ground, and would have loved to have seen it on the old brick too, or at least a VC/Wiiware release. This deviation is art in it's basic form, right? I mean it's not some sort of animation that I am too broken to get is it?

Uh...no. It's not an animation or anything, just a nice little picture.

Hhm... I had a similar feeling towards most of the bosses in the Indie game 'Chalk' (Except the Carnivorous Four).

Ah, konjak's game; I was playing it a few days ago. I wouldn't say that the boss designs in that game were uninspired, per se, as the chalk motif necessitated simple designs. But if you look at Guardian Legend's enemy sprites, there was clearly little to non effort put into the design. Often, they didn't even bother anti-aliasing the sprites or removing jags.

True, true, I myself thought that their designs were likely so simple due to being chalk drawings.

Thanks. Personally, I think it's a bit overdone, as a cheap way to be 'retro' without actually taking from the more meaningful aspects of old game design.

Amazing! I love old school games! with nice designed sprites!! I think that I already told you that ^_^
There could be any possibility of making a team in wich we could do an action rpg with sprites?

godsavant In reply to Luisazo [2009-11-01 05:09:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Indeed, you've expressed to me your fondness of retro games; I'd be open to collaborate in the future, though my lack of competent graphics software makes me unable to do so at the moment- particularly for action rpgs, where framecounts would be quite high.

Luisazo In reply to godsavant [2009-11-05 16:43:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Indeed... I'm trying to do a little Pokemon Like game (without creatures, just humans with special skills) but, the game is like pokemon in battle so, the frames would be just... ONE
