Let me tell you how much I love that game: Enough to where I wish Game Freak could publish another non-Pokémon title or even a sequel to this game or Pulseman. That is, if Nintendo would allow them to.
I love the Pokémon series and all, but it's kinda disappointing when a company shifts its focus on a series and sparsely publish anything fresher. Like the last game they worked on before they shifted their focus was some Japan-only game on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System called 'Bushi Seiryūden - Futari no Yūsha,' and that was almost it for them. I have to say that anyone who considers themselves hardcore Pokémon fans should go check out Game Freak's colorful (yet sadly small and limited in comparison to their most popular series) library.

Heh, wow! I only picked up treasures when I stumbled across them or the FAQ revealed them; do you get anything for collecting them all?

Ooh, is that an obscure character I see? Ah, Drill Dozer. How you almost caused me to slam my GBA SP against the wall!
As per usual, your pixel-ing is top notch! The only gripe I have is that because of the angle of our beloved Jill, we cannot see much of any of her Drill Dozer. In that respect, I think I may like your previous attempt better...! (though this one captures the original art style a lot more)
As for GameFreak branching out from the Pokémon series? I have a feeling that Nintendo controls that decision, as they are a subsidiary to them. It's too bad really. I own many of their other English games (Mendel Palace for NES, Pulseman for Genesis/WiiVC, Drill Dozer for GBA), and each of them are very good games for their time. Unless Nintendo has anything else to say, I'm afraid that GameFreak will have to wait.

Yeah, I started off with this reference pic of her face ([link] ) and afterwards, I couldn't find a good angle to show the Dozer without making the entire piece HUGE (I had some good ideas for it, too, like making the eyes a dot matrix...). Also, Jill is MUCH more hideous in-game than in Ken Sugimori's original sketches.
What I'm thinking about Pokemon is that, since it's so formulaic and established now, there's no reason another B-tier studio couldn't take over development of those titles and let Game Freak work on the next big cultural phenomenon. It's just smart business.

Hey, who said anything about ugly? Them sideburns gives her character! (even if she IS a silent protagonist [in game]; you figure it out!)
Another studio taking over the main Pokémon games? While it makes sense for us, I don't think Nintendo will take that "risk". The video game series has generated millions in revenue, if not greater, all thanks to GameFreak's ability to keep the series fresh to the buyers. In that sense, why would Nintendo want to let another studio take over if GameFreak still does a grand job?
Pokémon is still crazy popular worldwide, and Nintendo intends to keep it that way. A new studio has the potential to screw things over, and doing so with one of their most popular series would tarnish Nintendo's reputation. (this could be said for Other M, but that's for another day!)
I don't doubt that GameFreak has some fantastical ideas brewing up there, but until they lose credibility, it's unlikely that new things [other than Pokémon] will brew up often enough.
...ugh. Pardon if the above doesn't make sense, as staying up well past midnight can do that.

woooah, this is nice!
It looks like some large sprite you'd actually see in the game! I just wish the shoulder buttons didn't die so easily on Nintendo products. If not, I might still have this game, you know?
Speaking of Gamefreak trying new things, do you remember Sparkman? It was basically Megaman Battle Network for Sega Genesis (but a platformer instead of an rpg). You could aspecially tell they made it because the characters looked like they were straight out of Pokemon, but with sci-fi armor.

Great stuff, I couldn't tell that was pixel art from the thumbnail. Drill Dozer was really fun and charming, but it probably didn't do so well in comparison to all of Game Freak's other games. I guess it discourages them from investing their time into things beside Pokemon, which is unfortunate as they've shown a lot of creativity in their other ventures!

Thanks, it's been a long while since I've done larger-scale pixel art. Admittedly, my first exposure to Game Freak was through Pokemon, but at this point it's such an established franchise, I wonder why they don't hand it off to other outside studios to churn out colored versions, and give Game Freak free reign to work on a brand new IP.
