Description So, a recent secret on Fandom!Secrets sort of inspired me to draw Randall here. He was one of my brief cartoon crushes back when Monsters Inc. first came out, and I still think he's awesome today.

LIGHT(ish) RANT AHEAD: DON'T READ IF YOU JUST WANT TO ENJOY THE PRETTY PICTURES!!

Anyway, I had known for a while that Randall had quite a few fans. What I didn't know was that there was a fairly big debate between them as to whether Randall was really a villain or not. Personally, I think the guy's a pretty big jerk, but that's just me. I wouldn't say he's pure evil, but I just don't see him as the victim in any way. And as for him possibly reforming...well...MAYBE that could happen...but to be honest, I wouldn't want it to. I mean, if Randall reformed, would he really be the same character? I just don't think he would have the same charm he has now, and besides, anyone who knows me knows I'm a sucker for villains.

I realize him reforming would be impossible in the prequel since, well, it happens before the first movie, but even if it were a sequel, I personally wouldn't want to see him reformed. Not to mention that I have a feeling he wouldn't even be IN a sequel at all.

There also seems to be a lot of hate for Mike and Sully from Randall fans, which I also don't get. I mean, sure they banished Randall, but what did you expect them to do? I'd say compared to the fate of a lot of Pixar villains, he was lucky to get off so easy. Honestly, though, you've gotta be able to separate yourself a little from the characters. I mean, I have a huge thing for Hook from Peter Pan and the Pirates, Vector from Despicable Me, and Quackerjack from Darkwing Duck, but you don't see me trashing Peter, Gru, or Darkwing just because they do bad things to the villains I like. And yes, all three of those villains are at least as sympathetic as Randall is.

Anyway, sorry about the unwarranted rant, but that's just my two cents on the subject. Enjoy creepin' Randall in the meantime!

The major difference between Randall and Vector, however, is that people have a real reason to sympathize with Vector.

I'm pretty sure if his dad wasn't in the evil business (nor such a dickwad towards his son) Vector wouldn't have become a villain himself.

Randall, on the other hand, has seemingly no real reason for anyone to sympathize with him. He's just an asshole, pure and simple. I wouldn't say he was pure evil - there are other characters from children's movies who are far worse - but he's an asshole, one who only cares about himself and not giving two hoots about who he hurts in his quest to be number one.

Yeah. Although Waternoose was controlling him to a point.

I think Waternoose wasn't controlling Randall so much as he was desperate enough to use Randall's scream sucker to save his company. They were more like partners than anything else.

I kind of wonder about Waternoose, though. Was he JUST desperate, or does he possess some level evil like Randall does? Maybe both? I have no idea. It's hard to tell. He acts all grandfatherly in the beginning, all proud of Sulley and caring very much about the welfare of Monsters, Inc. He's not some money-hungry bastard. But... well, he said, "I'd kidnap a thousand children before I let this company die!" and that he'd basically get rid of anyone in his way. That's kind of sick.

And I think Randall's invention would have revolutionized the scaring industry and he would've been happy and renowned if he hadn't gotten caught up in Waternoose's crap.

Whoa, wait a minute. You DO realize that the Scream Extractor would have hurt the kids that were put in it, right? Look what happened to Fungus!

Well, I meant with fine-tuning. I think without the rushing of Waternoose's interference, he would have been able to perfect it so it collected just like the cans, only faster.

Hmm... I dunno. To fine-tune it, it would require testing... probably on children... who get hurt in the process...

... Now that I think about it, I wonder if Randall already did testing on kids to make sure the machine worked in the first place. *shudder*

Most likely testing on monsters. And think about today's world. When things are inhumane for testing there's mathematical equations as well!

Hmm... I guess that's true. But how exactly would Randall get willing test subjects, ones that won't blab about his plans? What he was doing wasn't exactly legal. The CDA was all over that like bees to honey.

I say build the thing, use demos on inanimate objects and equations to prove it works, then take it up with Waternoose as to how it could be implemented on the scare floor.

Oh gosh, I loved Randall when I saw that movie. XD And he brought me to love Steve Buscemi as well. And I think the Pixar people will decide what happens should Randall be in the next movie (I don't know if he is or not, I live under a rock you see), you can't really change that no matter how badly you want to.

True. If they reformed him, fine, but I just don't see how people are denying that he was a villain in the first place.

I also didn't really see him as a villain.. but it's a Disney movie, so any one who even goes past the line of being a meany head qualifies as a villain by default.

I don't know. Had he succeeded, it probably would have ruined a lot of lives, and it was made pretty clear that he knew that. Sure, if it had all just ended with him cheating and being a jerk, he wouldn't really be a villain, but he kidnapped Boo, strapped her to a machine that, quite frankly, looked like it might have killed her or at least severely injured her, and tried to kill Mike and Sully. At the end of the movie, he seemed pretty villain-y to me.

I totally get the whole secret crush thing. I had one on him when it first came out too. Have you heard about the prequel coming out?

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. A lot more than to the Cars sequel anyway...I don't have very high hopes for that one.

I love Randall - in large part because I have a sort of weird, creepyish crush on Steve Buscemi - and y'know what, I totally get your rant. I wouldn't want to see him reformed although I wouldn't mind, in the prequel, seeing him *turn into* a jerk... but that would probably just piss off his fanbase even more.

"Separating yourself from the character" is the best way to phrase this advice that I can think of. I don't really get the mentality of people who go for villains, want to reform them, and then sort of somewhere decide that offscreen they already ARE reformed and the people treating them as if they are still villains are just monstrously wrong. Randall was doing something pretty awful. I dunno if it makes him evil, probably more just ambitious and sleazy, but it was still awful and we don't see any sign that he cares or is moved to make reparations for it. With that being the case, banishment makes sense. What else is going to happen - send him to jail? About the same thing, from what I can tell.

Anyway, good job on the pic! I really like how you managed all the arms. That's a tricky design. You made him very fluid and lizardy and also with that slightly near-human touch that they put into things at Pixar. Good work!

Thanks!

Yeah, I agree 100%. There's sympathizing with a villain, and then there's completely denying that he/she is a villain to begin with, and from what I've seen, some Randall fans are crossing that line. Which is fine, I suppose, in fanon, but not really valid in canon.

And poor Mike and Sully... Sheesh! They get TRAMPLED in the Randall fandom just for doing what they have to do to defend themselves from being killed.
