In tribute to the late, great STAN ‘THE MAN’ LEE we are using this weekend to complete our tribute to his work as one of the greatest co-creators in comic book history…
Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos was a comic book series created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and published by Marvel Comics from 1963 until 1981. The series featured a team of elite soldiers in a First Attack Squad which was stationed in a military base in England to fight missions primarily in the European theatre of WWII. Under Captain “Happy Sam” Sawyer, Fury was the cigar-chomping noncom who led the racially ad ethnically integrated unit consisting of Corporal “Dum Dum” Dugan (a former circus strong man), Private “Izzy” Cohen (the first demonstrably Jewish American comic hero), Private Gabriel Jones (an African-American), Private Dino Manelli, Private “Rebel” Ralston, Private Percival “Pinky” Pinkerton, Private “Junior” Juniper (who died in #4) and Private Eric Koenig (a German defector who hated Nazis).
