Description 2022 PRINTS AVAILABLE: www.inprnt.com/gallery/grace-d…

Hardly anybody knows about this place - this is the old Selby Tunnel that used to run streetcars under the tallest hill in the city (the one with the Cathedral of St. Paul on it).

It's all boarded up now, thanks to GM taking over the transit lines and burning the streetcars. Such is progress, I guess. A few years ago, someone broke in to this tunnel and got some pretty neat pictures. www.kitzi.com/selby.html It's been sealed off again, but if you go up and knock on it...it's barely seven inches thick. Someone should try getting in again.

Streetcars looked fun. Sometimes I wish I would've been around in those days.

But yeah. Me and my nostalgia. This is for an urban landscape painting project.

Oil on board.

The upper entrance, c. 1912: www.cityhistory.us/stpaul/imag…
(now completely filled in and paved over)

Beautiful painting. I like the choice of colors- just nice and simple (in a very good way.) It feels calm to me like I could sit in your painting for hours and sketch.... ahhh Wonderful

Nice painting. I loved the photos. Boy would I love to get into the old tunnels. What great shots I could get. I love our old history of St. Paul. I did the Gangster tour a few years ago that was fun. I would recommend to anyone to take that Tour.

Actually, I just talked to a friend of mine who does urban exploration. Currently, to get into the selby tunnels, he says you would need a sledge hammer at best, and when the guy made the hole last time, the tunnel was just a mile long tunnel filled with "hobo related garbage" when my friend got in there.
If you interested in urban exploration shots, there are plenty of sights that are far more interesting, you just have to have some guts to go see them. (seriously. nerves of steel in some cases)

Check out the photos from the last time it was open, though - I wanna go in there and get some photos lit like that! Also, I want to go in and walk how far back it goes. Wishful thinking, but I can geek out and go "Hey, I'm under the Cathedral!" Or, whatever.

I've seen the photos, and they are quite cool! This particular tunnel, according to my friend, runs for about a mile and ends with a concrete wall. Still, there are plenty of tunnels around the twin cities, you just have to have guts and gumption. Mostly guts, 'cause some of these places aren't exactly safe. High places, sharp rusty edges, unsanitary conditions, flooding, and so on.
First rule of urban exploration: DO NOT EXPLORE ALONE!
Second rule of urban exploration: SAFETY GEAR! GOGGLES! GLOVES! and knee pads probably wouldn't hurt.
Third rule of urban exploration: FLASHLIGHT! BRING TWO AND BACK UP BATTERIES!

As I ignore the grains I find this photo quite interesting. Nicely done yes, I like the abstractness of it as well as the color which drags up the vividness of the quality.

Haha, sorry about the iffy photo. My other tries had some massive glare, but rest assured - if I manage to snap a better one, it'll go up here!

Thank you very much, too! I'm flattered that you like it!
