Tracing over photos is considered art? When the fuck did this happen?

Photoshop art is awful and lifeless. The only reason you have so many page views is because you draw anime chicks with their tits out. BRAVO!!!

I didn't trace over a photo. If you watch the Livestream video, I started from a completely blank canvas. I did use reference however.

dude, what's your problem? please respect peoples art!! That's one of the rules here on dA. Just because your jealous doesn't mean you can insult people to the extreme. *tsk tsk*

I have the right to my opinion, and my opinion is- I don't like where art is going because of the digital medium. Do I use photoshop as a tool? Yes. I draw, ON PAPER, for countless hours and if I think my piece needs some color I will color over my shaded drawing with the program photoshop because I don't paint well. BUT, because I've put the time into my shading and the presentation is there on paper, I barely have to do anything with photoshop in terms of finding the colors.
You're right; I should be more respectful of peoples art. It's just a firm opinion of mine that when you draw from scratch on photoshop, that the piece ends up lacking life. It just looks stale to me.

I'm originally a traditional artist myself, but I made the switch to doing mostly digital 2-3 years ago because that's where the illustration field is headed, since digital art is quicker to produce and more convenient to distribute for clients. I do think that traditional art will and should always be held in a higher regard though, if only because of the extra level of craftsmanship and expertise that's needed. There's nothing quite like seeing a great painting right in front of you, and knowing that the artist didn't employ a bunch of "tricks" in order to make his work easier.
That being said, digital is just another medium, and the fundamental rules of art still apply. Line quality, value and color are still as important as ever, and as a medium it has its own set of problems and limitations. However we've also started to move away from that early 2000's stock-image-clip-art look, and now the computer is more than just a novelty or gimmick. Lots of people these days are doing legitimately provocative, meaningful work, but like everything else, you just have to look for it. And considering that we view everything through LCD screens nowadays anyway, the mediums used are becoming less important.
Also, this is deviantart -- there are worse offenders of the "drawing anime chicks with their tits out" thing than me
