Description I failed an exam because I painted this instead of pulling an all-nighter as I was supposed to. Not that it matters, now.
The Jungle Books are still cool.

Photoshop, mouse

edit (May 3, 2006): blurred the tiger's rear and the background, and shortened the nose. Thanks ~deatheclipsed .

Thank you! I'm not sure what people think of when they say "a really long time", but I can assure you it didn't feel like such. I got it done in a few hours. When you're listening to music as you work it really doesn't seem like an effort

But for some reason, ever since I'm working with a tablet, I lost that stubborn patience that helped me finish paintings like this one. Now I want to get everything done REAL FAST and... of course things don't turn out as great.

Actually I have a tiny tablet now, got it for my birthday two years ago (or three?) But painting with a mouse is perfectly possible, except it takes far longer. People should try
Thanks!

*squee* tiger! I love how its eyes match the colour of the background, and it's so intense I also love the details on the textures of the fur.

um, critiques, since you asked, the black patterns on the face are sharper and darker than the ones on the body (esp those to the side of the face), I'm not sure if it's intentional due to perspective, just thought to point it out.

Anyway, awesome painting!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GreenSprite In reply to MapleRose [2006-11-14 07:45:17 +0000 UTC]

Yep, the patterns are blurry on the back because I blurred the background, hoping to give it a sense of perspective. I've probably overdone it, but it was a lesson learned.
As for the eyes, I'm not sure I wanted to have them matching the background, but I like it too that it ended up this way. It sort of brings them out.
Thank you for the comment and fav, I appreciate'em a lot you know

revenind, allow me to congratulate you for the marvelous piece.everything firts so perfectly, mai ales culorile estompate din fundal.and the tiger looks so realistic!
this was such a nice surprise...

Blur the rear edge of the tiger to push his hindquarters back and to push his front forward. Shorten the nose and keep in mind that a felines face is more or less flat, It can almost be mad up in a series of different cubes....Their noses aren't like ours they are the front part, in this it looks like his nose is drooping down...very nice painting regardless...I like youi color choice.

GreenSprite In reply to DennisDarmody [2006-05-02 07:34:33 +0000 UTC]

holy cow, now that was advanced critique i'm totally going back to the painting tonight to do what you said. i only hope i get it right... but i'll try!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DennisDarmody In reply to GreenSprite [2006-05-02 12:27:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh it isn't tat hard ....just have to think of movies and photos that use blurring and sharpness to add emphasis, though here you're just trying to give the illusion of realism, blurring is the best way to do that, when we look at something all else goes blurry 'cause we aren't focusing on it, when we blur an edge in a piece we amp that illusion up and so it makes it seem that musch more real, it is also an easy way to make backgrounds (even loose ones, like this) look more realistsic and it pushes the focus (tiger) forward....

Good luck!

GreenSprite In reply to DennisDarmody [2006-05-03 07:26:43 +0000 UTC]

hmm... i did it. check it out please
i think i overdid the blur a little...altough it is certainly better than before, it's not 100% right. i bet the problem is that the background sucked to begin with.
i was afraid that the nose shortening would be difficult, but it was actually the easiest part. and i like it more now it's just the second time i change a painting at someone's advice, thanks for talking me into it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DennisDarmody In reply to GreenSprite [2006-05-03 12:29:14 +0000 UTC]

np...yeah the blur is a touch strong in the background but it isn't distracting.... I usuallly have my aackgorund on another layer and then do a gaussian blur to it so that way i can control the amount of blur.... I think this loojs much better and the nose too is better though for some reason I still think it is too lonog....but that is going from my head I haven't looked at any references so I guesss if you are using a picture then nevermind me.... but I think the tigers face needs to be more 'flat' and less 'long'.....lol....I guess....

Very nice, much improved...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

GreenSprite In reply to DennisDarmody [2006-05-03 16:57:34 +0000 UTC]

thank you, if you really think so, i'm glad.
as for reference, i did use reference back when i painted it, now i don't have the pic anymore. the background _is_ on another layer...sort of. i start with different layers, but can't keep myself from painting all over in the end, especially when great amount of shading is involved. anyway, it doesn't matter, it's bad practice and i'll stop it
thanks again for the very helpful comment. such things are indeed rare.

another suggestioin is to lock your layers when not working on them....that is how I keep my 40 some odd layers from getting F'd up...lol....but I still mess up once in a while....lol
