Description You’ve probably seen Deinonychus (the terrible claw) in the Jurassic park films, stripped naked and mislabelled as Velociraptor. Personally, I think feathering adds so much design potential! This guy’s ruffled neck was inspired by cinereous vultures.

This is digital painting, with pencil/paper texture overlaid. As always, comments are very appreciated - I'd love to hear what people think!

MISTAKES that have been noted (by others & myself):
- feathers should insert along the second finger
- tail fan should continue to the base
- wings should be fuller
- feathers should not form a "cat-like" pelt

I learn more with every illustration!

Yeah, this isn't accurate. It's neat to see how much I've learned since painting this last fall.

Amazing job, though you messed up something else in the tail fan as well:
Thanks to a discovery last year 2015 of Zhenyuanlong, a new Chinese dromaeosaur we now know that all smaller terrestrial Dromaeosaurs had a tail fan not just at the tip but running along the sides of the tail, like this (40.media.tumblr.com/5b10fc4be6… ).

This just tip rounded tail fan is inspired of Microraptor an Sinornithosaurus, who did indeed have a tail fan just at the tip but those two and a few others are tree dwelling gliding dromaeosaurs, and again Zhenyuanlong from last year tells us that a rounde tip tail fan like that was unique to tree dwelling dromaeosaurs and not the rest.

There are some possible exceptions though, larger dromaeosaurs like Utahraptor and Dakotaraptor migh have had a regular just tip one, the same goes from a subfamilly of dromaeosaurs called the Unenlagiines

I really love how this looks, you've managed to replicate a traditional style in this image!
Deinonychus happens to be my favorite dinosaur, and I feel like it needs more attention.

Cool! Looks like the old watercolor art used to depict prehistoric creatures, very muted and classically designed!

Beautiful! Rare to see a Deinonychus in what would've been its likely habitat too
