Description I just got back from my west highland trip, took me 13 hours just to get home from Skye. Best trip I've ever been on though, I can't wait to go back.
I spent 3 days on Skye, 2 of which were in Elgol. I was sick the first night from bad seafood which ruled out a sunrise and it poured with rain the second day and night, but the first evening had some amazing light.
This is nothing the world hasn't seen before I spent a good 30-40 minutes looking around for a composition I hadn't seen before, but I'm sure it's been done before, probably better
Anyway, can't go to Skye and not shoot Elgol, I hope you enjoy

This is a well composed image of a view that has been shot countless times before.

Like you say, you cant go to Skye and not go to Elgol. In my opinionthis has to be one of the best view in the world.

The images sucess lies in the colour contrast between the cool colours of sea and sky and the warm colours of the rock. It show that there is truth in the saying 'warm colour come forward and cool colours receed'.

The composition is strong with good use of leading lines to send the viewers eye out to the mountains.

The image has been very well processed and appears very realistic.

In terms of improvements I would say that later light may have given more form to the rock, particularly on the left. I think the compostion could have been twakent to reduce this area a little more. Perhaps a slightly longer focal length would have helped.

Otherwise and excellent image and one that I really enjoyed viewing.

Good composition. You've done everything right in my eyes, as there is a Foreground, the rocks, then the middle, the water an the rock to the right, and then the sky as the third element.
I like the contrast of the blue sea and sky, and the warm tone of the rocks.
Everything is correctly exposed as far as I can see... the shady path in the foreground leads the viewer's eyes to the shore, this is good.
And I like the light coming in from the left side with these beams in front of the mountain in the background.

Which f number did you use for this, and what was the focal length?

yeah. I was saying to :devapstyguy: that really you could spend a week just in the Elgol area. I'll be heading back in the summer at some point hopefully though I am slightly worried about the midges. Do you have a genius ideas for avoiding them/repelling them?

Greg-McKinnon In reply to Alex37 [2009-04-08 09:51:42 +0000 UTC]

I don't think a way actually exists xD When I went camping when I was younger we used some spray called skin so soft, nothing to do with midges, but it worked quite well.

yeah, I read about that stuff. I might see if I can tract some down. Apparently it works by providing and oily barrier. I might actually just get a net for my head too, for when it gets really bad. I just have to go in the summer.

I think it's made by Avon, so if you can get a catalog I'm sure it'll still be in there. It would all be too good to be true if it wasent for midges

Theoneyedkitten In reply to Greg-McKinnon [2009-04-07 02:24:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, you got a damn beautiful sky. I would try darkening and raising its contrast to make it stand out more. Then maybe turn up the contrast on the rocks too, maybe raise their vibrancy (not sure about that one). I can't really say to much by directly looking at it. Usually I find my answers while working on the artwork in photo-shop (where you can experiment with colors, effects ect.) Please don't take me wrong I think this shot is really good, just some photo-shoping would make it even nicer.
