Human spaceflight was born during the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the USA. Technical achievements were meant to show political and military superiority. The race to the moon was decided in 1969 with the Apollo 11 landing. Further missions were launched till 1972 (Apollo 17). By then manned missions refocused into Earth’s orbit. Adding up duration of all lunar missions humans spent less than two weeks on the moon.
And because coming second means becoming the first loser today’s space faring nations and private cooperations are dreaming of the first flight to Mars.
