Description FINALLY got round to some more Dune design work, although this one's been in development for a while, not least since he's one of the most important characters of the early novels. So here he is, Gurney Halleck, favourite retainer and man-at-arms of House Atrieides, a truly mighty veteran warrior who's seen more action than the rest of the House's forces combined. He's also a talented poet and musician, particularly renowned for playing his ubiquitous baliset (as seen slung over his shoulder, pretty much as always). Good ol' Gurney, as ready with a smile as he is with his knife.

This is something of a DOUBLE rarity for me, this one - not only does this piece depict a BIG guy (which in itself prompted me to put together a little tutorial ([link] ), but also an OLD guy ... which, as anyone who knows my work can tell you, doesn't usually pop up in my work. So I was enjoyably challenged getting this guy to look just right, and I think I pulled it off. I'll admit right now this is pretty heavily inspired by the "classic" David Lynch's Dune version of Gurney, as played by Patrick Stewart ... but then he did such a fantastic job with the character I really can't possibly think of anyone else when I'm reading it, so ...

Original inks created with Pilot Hi-tecpoints on Bristol Board, digtal colours created in Gimp 2.6 with my Wacom Bamboo Pen. You can also find my original pencils, inked lineart, digital colours and background in my scrapbook: [link] , [link] , [link] and [link] Gurney Halleck is property of the estate of Frank Herbert.

Yup. Gurney rules, definitely. Of course I HAD to go with the classic Patrick Stewart, but then he's always been the voice in my head when I read Gurney anyways ...

Well he was pretty handsome as a youth ... speaking ENTIRELY from an academic point of view, being a red-blooded hetero male, of course ...

Although if I WAS a lass I'd probably go for Kyle ... if I wasn't a lesbian, which would be more likely ...

I know ... the main problem is, since I'm limited to working on A4, I can only do so much by hand with my pencils/inks, whereas I'd LOVE to be putting together big, complex pinups with groups of characters and detailed backgrounds and stuff ...

Exactly. It is annoyingly limiting, especially for someone who has some pretty grand plans and wants to start doing more dynamic compositions ...

Glad to see that scar. None of the renditions of Dune have covered that. And yes, I do definitely see the Patrick Stewart in him. Looking good as usual.

Well the inkvine scar is such a staple in the book I'm totally AMAZED they haven't shown it yet ... and yeah, well Patrick's like the DEFINITVE Gurney, so I couldn't help it. Thanks, mate.

Collon28 In reply to Grigori77 [2010-06-03 03:07:02 +0000 UTC]

Though I think I can go for Stewart's looks, mixed with the guy's accent in the miniseries. That would be a good pairing.

The take on Duncan from the first mini-series was pretty much spot-on to the way I've always read him, not least with the Scottish accent. He's exactly how I draw him ...

Cute ... he always talks with a Scottish accent when I read him. As for the second mini-series, when Hayt popped up they'd lost it, just cast some generic Brit actor ...
