Description My third Dune design, and obviously after starting out with the Arrakeen lovers I've moved on to the charismatic and noble Atreides ... and of course where else to start than my very favourite of all the Dune characters, Duncan Idaho. Specifically here we have the ORIGINAL Duncan (not the Ghola versions seen in later volumes, but the living breathing man), who was perhaps the finest swordsman of his age and Paul Atreides' closest friend and one of his trusted mentors. Not to mention (according to the books and also, thankfully, the movie and mini series too) quite the looker. Apparently ...

I had a BALL doing this one, it worked great almost entirely from the start, and turned out pretty much perfect for me. Yeah, this one really was a proper labour of love. It also represents my tightest, most professional colour job to date both with Gimp AND my new tablet - I seem to have finally reached the point where it actually looks proper like one of my old hand-coloured-with-markers trad pieces ...

Anyway, as you can see there's a definite post-Renaissance vibe going on here, which I feel is a pretty good representation of where I'm heading with my overall interpretation of the look of this future. After all, it's super futuristic, but there's a very real feel of historical influence to it as well, with a definite martial twist. I injected a uniform element here, but at the same time Duncan definitely has a softer, less formal take given he's really more of a man at arms than a rank and file soldier to the Atreides. And a very trusted, invaluable one at that ...

And before you ask, the shiny silver bracelet is an idea I'm tinkering with regarding personal shield generators ...

Original inks created with Pilot Hi-technpoints on Bristol Board, digital colours created in Gimp 2.6 with Wacom Bamboo Pen. You can also find my original pencils, inked lineart and digital colours in my scrapbook: [link] , [link] and [link] (but like a muppet this time I kinda fluffed the saving so I DON'T have a clean version of the background for perusal this time ) Duncan Idaho is property of the estate of Frank Herbert.

In fact as we speak they are in the works ... best thing about Paul, in fact, is that I can have a crack at a few different periods of his life ...

A really cool interpretation of the character. I was wondering where his shield was located. Probably a good spot, if any.

Him being a swordmaster, as well as a mentat and zenbuddhist, what could be a more potent combination?

Grigori77 In reply to Collon28 [2010-01-31 01:46:05 +0000 UTC]

I'm playing around with a variety of possibilities for that - some would likely wear it on their wrists, others on their belts ... likely it would depend in the individual.

I am gonna tackle the gholas at some point ... right now, though, I'm mainly concentrating on the first book. So he still lives here ...

Collon28 In reply to Grigori77 [2010-01-31 03:30:26 +0000 UTC]

The gholas? but they all look alike. So couldn't you just repost this one and claim it to be Duncan 2? Or 3? Or 521 even?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Grigori77 In reply to Collon28 [2010-02-01 00:42:50 +0000 UTC]

Ah, but in a very real way the gholas are each their own characters, and often very different from their predecessors. The original Duncan wasn't even a mentat, that was a little something added by the Tleilaxu. And there there was the most recent Duncan, grown by the Bene Gesserit themselves - he turned out to be a Kwisatz Haderach all by himself ...

Collon28 In reply to Grigori77 [2010-02-01 01:34:31 +0000 UTC]

You see? I haven't read that far yet. I've only gotten to God Emperor of Dune, where we have a Duncan who is similar to his first self, but is thrown into a strange and, in his opinion, perverse universe.

It's kinda silly; my dad is a fan of Dune, yet he only has up to Heretics of Dune. He wasn't even aware there were any other sequels after that one. So once I read that one, it'll be the last one in the series for me until I buy the next ones. From what I've read on Wiki, they get REALLY weird from here on out.

Grigori77 In reply to Collon28 [2010-02-02 01:29:55 +0000 UTC]

It is an extremely flamboyant series ... but then that IS why they call it "space opera". Heretics is definitely one of the best. Meanwhile, I've started reading the original AGAIN. Bought my FOURTH copy ... hopefully this one will stay in one piece and I won't be an idiot and lend it out and then never see it again ... This'll be like the sixth time I've read it, I think ...

Collon28 In reply to Grigori77 [2010-02-02 01:39:11 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I enjoy sharing books/movies I cherish, but occasionally I loan them out to people who either forget where the product came from, or it gets destroyed in their possession. My copy of Dune is first printing according to the inner pages, so NO ONE borrows that.

Oh, well you MUST read the books. Amongst sci-fi they are simply one of the most important and influential series EVER. To be brutally honest the majority of the more broad-scoped modern science fiction writing wouldn't be HALF as interesting if it hadn't been for Frank Herbert.

Should be able to find it in your local book shop. It's such a seminal classic they're just about guaranteed to have it, or at least be able to get it for you.
