Beautiful artwork
I'm trying to learn how to make ring worlds through digital Photoshop i was so fascinated when I saw so much art works from so many artist but I never got into the halo series but I'm now starting to read the Larry Nivens books.
So far I'm loving it 😎👍

Now that I look at this closer this is really freaky! And it's giving me the creeps just looking at it just imagining being on the surface and seeing the rest of the ring going upwards triggering my vertigo superhard and also realizing just how fragile the ring world is compared to normal planets. It's making my skin crawl just thinking of it

This is arguably Ringworld's most famous feature in cross eye free view stereoscopic 3-D!

Wow... I am trying to learn this type of skill for a project I am doing. A solid Dyson Sphere where THAT (stuff above) is in every direction.

But, wow, probably in 10 or 20 years if I study hard. Thanks for this wonderful vista.

With the smaller scale, it makes me think more of a Culture Orbital than a Niven Ringworld. Great piece though.

This looks like a modified photograph, I'm very impressed and it's an excellent depiction of Ringworld, but Ringworld doesn't have a moon.

Wow, I really love the detail here! Especially how you can't even see the ring begin to curve up due to the sky; shows just how big those rings must be.

Oh finally, thank you! I'm glad that Ringworld is more recognized as Larry Niven's rather than something from Halo. This is beautiful.

jeturcotte [2010-10-08 16:48:59 +0000 UTC]

Hah, I've designed a ringworld as well -- though the physics are a little different; from the surface you wouldn't even be able to tell there WAS a ringworld... you'd see to that horizon and nothing more. My only argument with this piece, though, might be that the parts of the ring that are darker than the sky itself should 'blend' or disappear as with our own atmospherics (the dark side of the moon, etc, is never darker than the sky in front of it.) Lovely ships; nice to see something different than normal!

Well observed.. I generally try to maintain a sense of perceptual realism in my matte work. I'm uncomfortable with the "unnamed light source" school of space art, not to mention the recurring violations of the Roche limit; however, as this piece was a commission, perhaps a bit of artistic license might be forgiven.. .

Oh sure oh sure; license is ALWAYS [for]given. Didn't mean to sound too critical

Great stuff. I'm reading through the Known Space series right now. I read Ringworld when I was in my teens and it was really inspiring. Just read it again and I was really shocked at how little Ringworld inspired art there seems to be out there. Just threw up a to-scale model of the Ringworld in 3DS Max and realized how difficult it is to accurately portray. Thanks for this.

This would actually be a perfect artistic accompaniment to Larry Niven's Ringworld. The picture is much more evocative of the book than the rings of the Halo games, as some have said.

Yes.. It won the Hugo, Nebula and Locus awards in 1970.. It's the first (and best) of a series..
