Description Well it sure has taken me long enough to finish this! Shoot, I started sketching it out when I was still in that GED prep class!

Well, with no further adue... may I present my concept for my BTMt. RR (Big Thunder Mountain Railorad) Heisler locomotive. "Heisler" type loomotives were one kind out of three types of geared steam locomotives. Unlike traditiona steam trains where the pistons are conected directly to the drive wheels via a "drive rod", geared locomotives are... well... Geared!
The Heilser style geared loco used a pair of pistons set up in a "V" arraingment similar to a automobile's engine block. The pistons turn a crank shaft which leads to beveled gears on the inside drive axels. Then traditional side rods trasnmited power to the outer drive wheels on the trucks.

Geared steam locomotives had ALL their wheels powered. This has the advantage of increadible tractive effort and strength. There is one trade off, geared locomotives were not fast by any means. They were built for power and not speed. These engines could haul or push heavy frieght trains up increadibally steep grades.

This loco is also on my "Build A Model Of" list and it will be done in On30 scale. The chassis will come from the Rivorossi HO scale Heisler. My orginial intent was to purchase the Wiseman Model Services On30 Heisler conversion kit and modify that using parts from BVM (Boulder Valley Models) or scratchbuild them.

What can be said for certain is that this is and will be an increadlibly charming locomotive and will look great sitting next to my 14 Ton "Mini Max" and "Gilpin" style 2-truck shay.

I hope you all like her!

How big you think this would be in Minimum Gauge? Specifically, 15 inch?

It would be pretty big! About half the size of the size of the real thing. (If the engine were real)
This was a prototype that was partial inspiration and so the engine I designed is about the same size.
www.trainweb.org/foothill/imag…

It's 3ft gauge, so reduce its size by half, and that would be about its size for 15 inch gauge.

I only ask since my girlfriend wants to plan out a minimum gauge style railroad with in-cab riding (where you're covered by the cab) and this is the only engine I've found that looks proportionally correct and isnt a forney.

Sorry again for the late response.

Wow, you have a girlfriend who actually wants a railroad!? Lucky you!!

My heisler is pretty small, but would still probably make a wonderfull engine for 15" gauge. There's a guy out in CA who has a very mountainous 15" gauge line and he has heisler-like locomotives. Though his are gas powered locomotives made to look like steamers. My engine would probably be bigger considering it's based on a small 3ft gauge prototype.

If you're planning a 15" gauge line, check out Sir Aurthur Heywood's stuff! Granted he's been dead for a long time... but he was the one who was really promoting Minumum Gauge railroading. He has some neat stuff he came up with. I've even thought about taking some of his designs and giving them a more American flair.

I heard about Heywood through some research and through my girlfriend as well. With me, I'm trying to convince her to design a Heisler based on both a freelance standard gauge design I drew up in MS paint recently (go check it out) and the Roaring Camp's No. 2 "Tuolumne", and I told her I preferred Heislers better because I'm more of the guy who runs everywhere so I need an engine speedy enough to do so. Hence, I picked the fastest geared locomotive I know.

Heislers are versatile locomotives, though I think an engine based on one of Heywood's designs may be more portable. If you wanted to take an your engine anywhere. However it's your engine so make it what you'd like!

Is your girlfriend here on DA?

She is, it's :devGalaxyExpress2199:. I prefer you turn on the mature tags before you look through it though, she makes "specialized" art as well as normal railway and War of the Worlds art.

I can't stand it when people say "I whish I could draw as good as you", and stuff like that. Anyone, and I do mean ANYONE can draw as good or better than I!!! The question you need to ask yourself is "How bad do YOU want to?".

Anyone and every one has th skill to create art of some kind. Keep in mind that an artist has their own unique style. You just need to develope yours.

They key thing is Practice. Practice as much as you can where ever you can. I draw or scketch at least one thing every day. (or make up for them on the days I do draw)

Practice is the key to being a good artist.

Those conversions have an interesting look to them, but I doubt it'd be hard to make a bigger one from 2 HO 0-4-0s that scales out a little better.

I'm not going for a "Westside" Heisler. I wanted something small intentionaly. Something similar in dementions to the Gilpin Tramway locos.

I know, just not my favorite style. I'm more into bigger geared steam, but I have seen some nice looking smaller ones. To me the HO conversions should have longer wheelbases to look right. Usually the smaller geared locos used the same size trucks as the larger.
