You know, they've made it clear that they absolutely will not let Maelon go and that they intend to use this research to start a xenophobic, somewhat genocidal empire. I think that taking an opportunity to set one on fire, which in actual combat doesn't get you any Renegade points, should not be a Renegade option. It should be common sense.

Actually that interrupt is neither renegade nor paragon, it does not result in any points and you kill the guy anyway, they just did not want to add a neutral option for some reason, in ME3 it becomes even more obvious.

My first time through this part I was trying so hard to be Paragon but that damned krogan and his vorcha always managed to kill me until I used the Renegade interrupt and took some of them out to begin with.
