Yes, we allowed--even encouraged our daughters to be unafraid of fire, snakes and all manner of other potential dangers most parents are fearful their children might come in contact with. Under our supervision they would use cigarette lighters and matches to perform work that was of interest to them. Of course stems of apples don't light, but this developed from her own imagination.

As one might notice, I was deeply under the influence of the work of Rembrandt in his technique of what I thought of as "how to see light in the dark."

this sounds like my parents. they encouraged us to learn how to build a "one match fire" as well as knowing how to use axes and the like. (presently my brother is working on making a portable stove)...

Really interesting image! I also approve of your parenting. I never forgot of the story of your daughter walking home from elementary school by herself because her teacher wanted her to do something she didn't think was right.
