Description Pencil on vellum

My idea here is that the young girl first ponders what the world is like out there. She concludes that it may contain some danger, but with caution, courage and that heroic feminine curiosity--she ventures out.

The greatest dangers faced in life are known as "what if's?".

Ah, my old friend. To the contrary. A "what if?" is the creator's (whether an artist or the creator of a business or new invention etc.) motivation.

Too true, sir. When used in such a way, they indeed become our most powerful ally. However, when they are reflected upon as missed opportunities that will never come true, then they become our greatest foe.

it's really beautiful and a skilled drawing, other than that, I just confused about the lighting and the window, can u tell something about that?
was it come from ur imagination or u used models?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hank1 In reply to saltyshadow [2006-12-22 09:27:08 +0000 UTC]

Both. First I imagined, or rather I had a concept for doing a self portrait. But I don't do self-portraits. So I used a model, my daughter, to express a kind of dual personality--one shy and introspective, the other bold and adventurous.

About the lighting and the window: the window in the foreground is just a place where the girl is. But for there to be cast shadows the way there are, there must be another window (unseen in the drawing) for the light source. The window in the middle ground is broken. It looks like a ruins in this area. An old destroyed place (a symbol of the girl's having worked through her shyness and fear of the world). The light there does come from that broken window.

Thank you for the compliment.
