From a review:

Another favorite of mine, “Approaching Storm” sits at the other end of the spectrum. The drama is intense. However, it is not the drama of color contrasts, but of menace. There is only one color - ominous blue. The white clouds in the center set off the dark clouds that surround them and the myriad of even darker birds whose restless swirling dominates the sky. Two birds, perched on a thick wire, provide a stark contrast while anchoring the scene in a world of normalcy. Yet that anchor has no base: Neither end of the wire is in sight and the wire seems suspended in space like the eye of a hurricane.

I really like the whole feel of this painting. And it kind of makes me think of Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds....

This is beautiful. Artistically and as an illustration of a story (the coming storm). The birds against those menacing clouds really say it all--who hasn't watched the poor flying things working their way in the wind? Suddenly, having the most efficient, "lofty," and envied mode of travel becomes quite a liability when the storm and wind are blowing against you. Better find a fence-line to cling to, hunker down and ride things out...

I love it.

This is a very scary image - it makes me remember those old WWII movies of the Germans bombing London, etc. Only these bombers are like Vultures - the little sparrows don't have a chance.
Excellent work, Robert.

It is scary at first glance. But you know what? The little sparrows do have a chance. They're "married" to each other and to the cable where they found a safe place.

This is one of my favorite of your works, Robert, but I still find it very scary. I am trying to remember the name of the German Expressionist artist who did the wood engraving called The Mothers - in which a circle of desperate mothers are trying to protect their desperate children. The Approaching Storm has just such an impact.

Before even reading the review I found this piece to be full of intense feeling, atmosphere, and mood. A sense of coming calamity and dread sweeps the viewer. The composition, use of birds, and color scheme just shout: "Danger! Caution! Run!"

You've done a spectacular job with creating an emotionally packed painting, Robert! This is simply stunning and moving.

April,

Thank you for your insight.

This is as dark a theme as I've ever gone. Yet notice the simple fact that I do give the two little sparrows a sanctuary. Yes, their eyes are red, but aren't they naturally? And I give a relief of the dreaded green in a touch of yellow in their feathers. The really scary thing is the circling large birds, not the storm. And these two have found a place of comfort.

Yes, I also noticed the hope intermingled in this. I actually noticed that just after sending my comment. So you got my first impression. When I saw it again directly after sending that I saw the beautiful hope in this painting and was even more amazed and captivated by this piece! This is truly a wonderful piece of art, Robert! Truly captivating! It draws in the viewer and stirs up so many emotions - first dread, then hope. Much like life....in this way the viewer relates completely to this piece.
