Description Oils on canvas

This is from a photo I took on a hill in Vietnam in 1967. It was sandbagged for we Marines, a permanent Outpost. At the top of the hill was a rather large main bunker, where our commanding officer spent most of his time. One of two radio operators was always there too (I was one of the radio operators). At night we'd hear animals, mostly rats, rats as big as cats rummaging around the perimeter. We'd pop a flare to light up the hill just in case it was enemy probing the hill. The flares I painted were not in my photo--in fact the photo was taken during the day. It's made up from memory of how interesting it was to see how our flares really worked. They had a little bowl with white phosphorus that burned so bright as to light up the night. Once popped from a hand held canister, the thing would go up some 1000 ft., then a parachute would open and the phosphorus would ignite at the same time. It would take some five minutes for the flare to descend, and burn out.

After Vietnam, I simply went out and took a photo of a local church and used it as a reference for this painting where the main bunker was. Why are our sand-bagged bunkers empty? Well, in Vietnam we were fighting "godless communism", the implication being that we were there to protect religion. Truth be known, much of Vietnam was Catholic then, and still is today.

Just to show how one can take elements of reality and rearrange them into a thoughtful picture.

A "particular" painting, strange at first, after reading had a different meaning, yet the colours, there's a "strange" athmosphere coming out

I'll try to explain the strangeness of the atmosphere. It has to come from the fact that as a teenager in Vietnam I was a very devout Catholic, even studied at the seminary to be a priest my first year of high school. Later I have become an unbeliever (of all faiths), but still admire the intellectual history of the Church. When I made the painting I was still struggling to let it go. Perhaps that explains the "strange" atmosphere.

I see!!!! I had to "shake off" my believes too, especially with the church kingdom, in Italy we grew up with a strong catholic mentality, they are loosing it nowadays, even Buddhism is very strong over here, but I am glad that I have realised long time ago, that I am better without it.

Thank You for the nice reply

Wow.....this picture brings home to me the universal truth that people are basically the same everywhere. The last thing I would have expected to find in Vietnam would be a church, since we were told the Vietnamese were, as you say, "godless". The parachute may have been a flare, but I got the feeling it was more a light to show the way to somewhere we should all go more often. And, intentional or not, during that war, I bet there was a lot of praying going on in that building! This painting is quite symbolic on lots of levels.

Even before I read the description, this came out to me as a powerful image.

The structure of the canvas helps to give it a slightly iconic feel - almost like something you'd see in any church.

The green sky, and your work with light and shadow on the roof of the church, gives this an almost ethereal feel. It is a simply fantastic image.
