Well... Todays chapter didnt really tell us much... [this might be a spoiler for you if you haven't read the lastest chapter) other than the fact that Ichigo may never be allowed to go back to S.S ever again cause he no longer is a shinigami...

This technique I think is like the Quincy Final Form: He maintains it as long as his will holds, but afterwords he burns himself out completely and loses his powers, leaving him a simple human soul.
The big question is "what next?" The next big arc might be about getting Ichigo's powers back while his human friends get the hang of the whole "spirit" business. But that's just a guess.

He might know how to unlock the technique, but he likely has never used it due to never needing it. Engetsu (his zanpakutou) might not be as powerful as Zangetsu's full strength. Otherwise, it might have made more sense for Isshin to use the Final Getsuga Tenshou instead of getting his son to use it.

Yeah, but it took him twenty years to recover. It shouldn't matter anyway, since Ichigo has access to Orihime's ultra-haxxor powers to fix him up as good as new. Or Rukia could always stick a sword in his chest again. /shrug
