Fantastic piece! Great use of dark, muted colors set the mood. Generous but blended highlighting captures detail and expression. Kudos.

Beautifully done. And I totally agree with all your responses as well. I love a good (emphasis on GOOD) slash fic as much as the next girl, but the gen fics usually win out. There's something about an unfathomably deep bond of friendship between two people that I find very appealing (take Yusuke and Kuwabara from YYH for another example). Friendship is very underrated in fanfic.

So intense! Touching and beautifully painted... Roy and Huges are awesome in general, so.

This picture is absolutely stunning! The amount of emotion just makes your breath catch. They seem very protective of each other, and I like how you can literally see the amazing friendship between these two.
Maes' face and expression is also incredible. I don't feel like there is nearly enough realistic depictions of the FMA cast, but you did a beautiful job.

I am afraid I must agree. Slash, as a phenomenon, is blinding people to true character interactions and draining the individual personalities out of our favorite fictitious persons. It's unfortunate, because it's mostly sexualization without true substance. That being said, I have no problem with (and even support) same-gender relationships in my fandoms so long as they are canon, or at least have some solid evidence of being so. As far as Roy and Hughes go, I think there is sufficient evidence in official art work, story, and production material to support a romantic relationship at some point in their history, before Gracia and Hawkeye. However, I think they moved on and remained fast friends. It happens, especially in war situations. It makes sense to their characters. What I dislike is when people begin to throw together anyone and everyone, without basis. Like, Roy and Scar? Really? No. There is no basis!! D:<

I know exactly what you mean. It becomes pure self-gratification at some point. Especially as it's always the good looking ones that get paired.
Strangely enough, I actually was dead-set against slash for all those reasons you mentioned when I ran into "evidence" supporting Roy and Hughes as more than friends.
I love character analysis, and I do it almost compulsively when I like a fictional character. So some of the biggest points, for me, were the exceptions Mustang for Hughes that were not part of his interactions with anyone else, not even Hawkeye (whom we know, WE KNOW, he loved deeply).
He carried a picture of Hughes on his person. The one time we see him cry, he cries for Hughes. He lets Hughes touch him casually and affectionately (something he doesn't let anyone else do. You can count on one hand the number of times he touches other people). He mixes official and personal business in a way unprecedented and actually COMMENTED on by his men, in his pursuit of Hughes' killer. He never does these things for anyone else.
Another interesting support I found was official art and extras. Hughes has a song called "Angel Heart" (last I looked, it was on youtube). In the translation, it's very clear he's talking to Roy, though no one is specifically named. He talks about their telephone conversations, the rain, protecting and supporting through hidden pain... Then comes this line:
"While you were sleeping with your face buried in the sofa, I kissed you softly. Donβt catch cold"
It wouldn't be Gracia or Elysia, falling asleep on their sofa, inadequately covered... not while Hughes was in charge! The next few lines corroborate that it isn't Gracia:
"If sorrow shoots you in the heart
Iβll believe in your strength
And be your unseen shield
On a street corner in the rain
Like a miracle of fate, weβll meet
My love will be your umbrella"
Hughes is married to Gracia, he's not an *unseen* shield. There's no miracles in Hughes meeting Gracia on a street corner, he sees her every day! (And loves every single one of them!)
There's no need for Hughes and Mustang to have a sexual relationship to have had a romantic one. I definitely think they operated as best friends, most of the time. Brothers, even. But there was an element of love in their relationship that surpassed even that. It's part of what makes me love them so much!
