Kawaiiiiii!

BUt why do you say that Royai can never be?! D: Okay, there hasn't been an appointment, a marriage or a kiss, but I think the way they handle things shows that they have feelings for each other. I don't need an official message for this, but there is this wedding pic from Bones^_-

Hands up for fandom!!!

Ah, I have seen it, and it made me deeply happy! But, realistically? I don't know if the path they chose would actually allow for it. According to the Brotherhood and manga series, Mustang's ultimate goal was to move the government to a democratic, peaceful system which would lead to his own trial and conviction as a mass murderer. Hawkeye would also have to pay for her part in the war. Knowing that, I think they would not delude themselves into dreaming of a happy future together. And even until then, they would still be in the military, and unable to "fraternize". So, while I think they love each other (so deeply) I don't think they get a happy ending. :/ They might, though. One never knows.

Yes, one never knows, but one imagines
I get your point, BUT... (xD (Sorry, I can speak about this years, too!)) I also was very afraid of the last chapter, because I was like "OMG, was will ahppen to Roy and all the others, served in the Ishbar War?!". But now he was even ranked to a General and is doing great in Ishbar policies. I don't think they will have a punishment- yes, who knows- but Arakawa surprised me here(positively), so I'm looking forward; and if they had really wanted, they would have punished them already, with or without democracy, because nobody would deny their mistakes. If Roy manages Ishbar and to change Amestris during his life time, I could imagine he stops his politics now he achieved his goal and is settling down- with Riza. They can have a happy future, despite everything else, even if it will take some time and to be serious, they already have a happy life; they went through so much pain together -you can call it destiny or whatever- and I am sure they'll find out pretty soon that the other one loves them as well, even without saying it. And this is the greatest luck, isn't it? Knowing there is somebody at your side, loving you deeply the same way you do.

Oh, yes, certainly. I think that, as you say, they are happy as they are, because they *do* know that they love each other. In Mustang's words, they understand each other perfectly, "because they have been together so long". Always, side by side, joined by something more than touch. And who knows? Maybe you're right. Maybe by the end of his restitution, the people will be more than happy to grant Mustang and his men full pardon for all their past wrongs. Maybe.

Nah, she didn't ever say! But she never gave us any . . . physical touch when someone wasn't dying. Which is just aggravating! So that's why I say she is in denial.

HapticMimesis In reply to Ryokiishidachan [2010-09-18 19:03:31 +0000 UTC]

I don't think she's in denial, I think she's very wise in not showing us the way they love each other, because it so private. They can't touch, they can't be seen. They're in the military, and could be dishonorably discharged for fraternization. They are working towards a goal that leads to both of their destruction. There's no way that they can actually BE a couple, even though they love each other deeply. I think that's part of what makes them so strong, so good, and so tragic. :/ They don't need to kiss each other to know, when they look each other in the eyes, that they are more connected by their souls. <3

I'll stop now. I could go on and on. lol

Ryokiishidachan In reply to HapticMimesis [2010-09-19 05:48:06 +0000 UTC]

Wait, wait, everyone talks about the 'fraternization' law, but did she ever come out and say that, in her military, there was in fact that kind of law?
I know there is one in our military, but from what I have researched it is only a problem if it compromises the chain of command. As in, someone starts having relationships to get ahead in the military, which, if there even is a fraternization law in the Amestris military, would not even be a question when Riza was taken to be under the command of the Fuhrer, although by then there were other reasons for them to be apart.
And I understand all that about them being more connected because it hasn't been shown to us that they are, but I would have appreciated at least one show of affection. Maybe a brush of their hands, or some kind of touch when they weren't in the middle of a battlefield.

HapticMimesis In reply to Ryokiishidachan [2010-09-19 08:54:24 +0000 UTC]

You know, you're right. She never actually mentions one. I'm pretty sure that, in their position, it would cause trouble of some sort, but maybe that's not their true reason for remaining apart.
As far as contact goes, at least we *do* get to see some. The fact the situations we see the contact in are difficult and dangerous doesn't lessen the impact for me, personally, because that's when people's true characters come out in any case. And it's completely in line with their characters and actions to respond in those situations, whereas they simply don't demonstrably and physically show affection - to anyone - otherwise. I mean, think of how often Mustang actually touches people at all. The only other person I can think of in regular physical contact (as far as I can tell from the official artwork, etc) with him is Maes Hughes, who doesn't care if an arm around the shoulders really ticks his best friend off. But in the midst of battle, when Roy thinks Riza might be bleeding to death, it is perfectly natural for him to cradle her close and press his cheek to her hair. It is natural for them to speak in low, intimate voices, and banter back and forth about shooting each other, because they may not get another chance. Such is the battlefield. It actually makes me a lot happier than any typical romantic situation.

It all comes to a matter of preference, then. Hahaha, I'm such a sucker for a good snogging scene . My roommates at the time when that chapter came out had no idea what was going on when I read the part where Riza was all bleeding to death for the first time, and then when he held her, I'm pretty sure they thought I was insane. How's this for three months late?

HapticMimesis In reply to Ryokiishidachan [2010-12-14 15:31:32 +0000 UTC]

(Laughs) Welcome back!

I am also a sap for some good snogging. It just has to be appropriate to the setting and characters, and I don't think it's appropriate for Hawkeye and Mustang. For instance, as far as Mustang goes, he never treated anyone he was close to in a publicly intimate manner. Hiromu Arakawa (in one of her bonus, comedic personality quizzes) said that his strong emotions and attachments actually embarrass him, causing him to act opposite to his inclinations. It's part of why he comes off as such a cold bastard so often! He never even uses the first name of his best friend (as far as I've seen from the manga and Brotherhood series... but I may have missed it if he did). He always calls him "Hughes" when he's being informal. He even uses his *mother's* code name, Madam Christmas, when he's talking to her. He only uses Hawkeye's first name once, when her father dies, and before he has become close to her. Otherwise, he uses her last name or title.

He also often avoids physical contact (when's the last time you see him casually stroll up to someone and touch them? Pretty rare. Only Hughes and Hawkeye are shown in friendly contact with him). But he allows himself to touch others in times of combat or danger. In purely emotional situations, he tends to physically withdraw (behind his hat at the funeral, into the hallway after Havok's outburst, under his hood in Another Man's Battlefield). These mannerisms, contrary to what many of us use and expect, are actually his greatest indications of affection. It's pretty ridiculous! hahaha!

But he allows himself to be a man of action, rather than emotion. And that's where I really read his devotion, to Riza, to Hughes, to his men, the Elric brothers, to his duty and his country. Also, his keen intelligence and understanding allows him to maintain intimate yet understated relationships with those around him. I mean, he and Hawkeye communicate through their *eyeballs*! lol. It's so beautifully subtle, so real, precious, unique, and *poignant* that I just wouldn't choose to have it any other way, personally. Mustang wouldn't be the same if he allowed himself to be open. His strength lies in his layers of complexity and mystery. And I think Riza likes that. I think she understands him perfectly.

Good to hear from you again, my friend! I hope life is treating you kindly!

I think it was one of the ones in the back of the manga books, if I'm remembering correctly. I don't know which one, unfortunately. It's been awhile. And "Another Man's Battlefield" is available to watch online (thank heavens, because it's SO GOOD!). I spent way more time over the summer researching Roy than was probably healthy, but now, all these months later, I don't remember where I found things. Sorry!
