I would love to see a graphic novel of Genesis of the Daleks, especially if this art is an indicator of how good it would be is that something that might happen or is it in development pause?Β

Holy shit, this is amazing. Β Absolutely everything in this is great- the colors, the lighting, NYDER'S FACE! Β I would LOVE to see a full graphic novel like this. Β It really gives it that "classic sci-fi" feel.

I don't think so. I might do another few pages at some stage, but I think the whole story requires about 60 double page spreads and I can't see me being able to do that.

Genesis of the Daleks often wins polls as the best DW story in the shows history.

This is pretty much perfect. I really like the Dalek panels, with the third one looking amazing (I can't remember the dialogue from this part so I can't remember which part of Dalek history this is).

Harnois75 In reply to TheDeviantMakepeace [2009-10-19 00:32:53 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. The third Dalek panel is something to do with a fleet of war rockets from the planet Hyperon if I remember correctly. I'll have to dig out the Genesis of the Daleks DVD and see what the dialogue is during the interrogation.

Despite the enthusiasm that might greets these ideas they are always shot down by the assumption on the part of the powers that be that there won't be any commercial interest. And if there's little enough interest in animating missing Dr Who (arguably a very worthwhile thing to be doing) then there's zero chance of a graphic novel of an existing story and an older Doctor getting the backing of a publisher. As a fan project it might see completion one day.

there is a large differnce bewteen an animation and a graphic novel. For a start if I saw an animation adaptation of anything which wasn't imediantly shown in the cinema I would imediantly see it as a cheap rip off and not watch it.
Although if it was missing eps and done to very high quality then I might be intrested.
A graphic novel is a completely differnt topic though. Even from this page alone I can see the hard work and detail that has gone into it. The resemblance of the Doctor in the third panel is astonishing and if I was older and could afford it I would buy a copy of this if twas realised.
What annoys me is that i bet if this was on the subject of the newer who and tennent then it would sell like wildfire.

Yes, well there is a new Tennant animation due this year, although it's almost too late to be relevant. Great shame that a little money from DW merchandise can't be siphoned into putting good Flash animation to missing stories. And I say Flash because although it might seem like the cheap option, the graphic quality does have an old school style that suits the era better than 3D in my opinion.

See? what did i tell you?
I went to an animation studio for my work experiance week. This studio did those cartoon things for the BBC and all of their work was in flash. I like 3D films but feel that they're being overdone now and do miss the old animation. When I heard about the flash though I couldn't help but feel very disappointed. To me flash is a programe that people like slinkers use for those amusing short animations on the web, or to make webpage interface things. I don't see it as a programe to make TV series from or film. What would be better suited for who would be the tradional animation with pencils and paper that are scanned in then coloured, now wouldn't that look so much better? If not costly and slower. Flash would also look too modern i think.

Harnois75 In reply to Herebellama [2009-06-18 21:35:53 +0000 UTC]

But you can do that with Flash. I've drawn characters with pencil that can be animated in Flash. It's true that vectorising the work makes certain things easier, but Flash can be made to look a lot like traditional animation, the latest version of Flash even more so. In fact, although this may not be a great example, I believe a new episode of MR Ben was made for the series DVD release which deliberately looked exactly as the original episodes. It's more about the art and how it is animated than any inherent problem of Flash being too modern - the method is modern, the results are up to the artists.

The Invasion episodes also employed After Effects and a couple of other programs to make things easier and overall I thought it was an extremely good exercise in storytelling. It had it's budgetary restraints, and Cosgrove Hall (or the guys at Firestep) would be the first to point that out, but looked at objectively, ie in the hard light of business commerce vs artistic integrity, I think it worked very well indeed.

There are some fans that just seem to expect Pixar, but were talking about 1960's DW and no matter how good we might all know it is, multi million pound animation is not going to happen. Flash - used with inspiration - is the best bet.

Herebellama In reply to Harnois75 [2009-06-18 21:56:33 +0000 UTC]

I know about the results being up to the artist (apart from the flash thing because most flash looks the same to me). There are better programes than flash out there though, like Toonboom (although that also looks a lot more complicated).
I've never seen it.
Yes that also, but what i'm talking about is simply drawing a lot of images, scanning them in, and animating them. Not expensive, but a bit slow on your own probably.
