Description In those days, not everyone had entertainment at their fingertips.  The open window was their view screen and the channels were constantly changing.

He was gazing out the window, content and not focusing on anything in particular.  I stopped to take this image, and then did two more, expecting changes in his reaction to me.  Not a change, each might as well had been the same exposure, even allowing for my slight movement for the alternative framing of his portrait.  It must have taken minutes from start to my passing on to my next adventure, in the inner city of downtown Cincinnati, Ohio, USA.

That is why I titled it stoic old man.

Taken with my Nikon F, with 50mm F2.0 Nikkor on Kodak Plus X 135mm panchromatic film, in the late 1960s.

Feel free to download, just give me photo credit.

Stunning capture.  His eyes and expression tell stories - you managed to capture them and they are still alive decades after it took place.  Thanks for sharing these images, Eugene.

Great photo and great story. It is surprising how one can look and apparently be mesmerized at the same time, not seeing anything.

Amazing! Just looking at the wallpaper and the biscuit tin. He looks rather sad. Great shot!

Great photo. The man looks tired. My grandfather used to sit for hours in our garage staring outside and not even move. In today's constant flow of entertainment, news, text messages, emails, and other assorted "stuff" I don't think people are capable of sitting for 5 minutes and doing nothing.
A nice look at a different time.
