Description A common sight back in the 1960s, 70s and 80s was an overhaul of the VW 4 cylinder air cooled engine.

Once the four bolts holding the engine to the transmission were taken out behind the air shroud of the engine, and some wire linkages disconnected, the engine could be removed and serviced.  Usually this was replacement of one or more of the 4 cylinders or two valve heads, possible the oil cooler column hidden under the sheet metal or just the clutch and or its pressure plate.  It looked more difficult than it was, but you had to maneuver to remove it, and often you cut or scraped your hands. Once mounted on an engine stand, you could swing the engine to a proper angle to do the work required.  Simpler repairs to the engine, like generator, gas pump, valve adjustment, timing the distributor, spark plugs or oil change could be done within the car's engine compartment, or easier on a lift.

In this photo taken at Kennedy Motors, Barry is wrenching near the heater box sheet metal.

Taken with my Leica M2, with 50mm F2.0 Summicron, on Kodak Tri-X panchromatic film, in the early 1970s.

Another good one. Nice lines, and you have captured the intensity of the work. From the thumb, I thought that was a more formal shirt - looked a bit odd that way. All comes clear in the large view though.

My first car was a VW Bug, followed by a pair of buses, a Vanagon, and a Rabbit.  I even had a Corrado for a while, until it got too expensive to get parts for it.
