Description Qizilbashs were various of Shi'a muslim turkish militant groups orginated from turkish tribes of Anatolia, which helped Shah Ismail I to overcome Aq Qoyunlu and found Safavid Dynasty in Persia. Qizilbash troops were mostly mounted, elite cavalry of Safavid army; their courage and loyalty was admirable and they palyed commonly a decisive role in battles. Qizilbash began to get powerful, gain high positions in safavid government, what caused them more enemies among other religious/ethnic groups as well as Persian kings, who were afraid of power of Qizilbash Emirs, specially because they were only obedient to their fellow Qizilbash masters. Shah Abbas I took many anti-Qizilbash actions such as lowing number of their troops and supporting rival groups e.g. Shahsevan(Georgian and Armenian Ghulams). Anti-Qizilbash policies of Safavid Kings continued after death of Shah Abbas their power began to weaken, till in course of decline of Safavid Dynasty some Qizilbash tribes took advantage of chaos, rose to power and later founded Afsharid and Qajar Dynasties in Persia.

Religious Beliefs:
Qizilbash were also very faithful followers of twelver Shi'a doctrine, therefore i used to write the following vers of poet of persian denser and scholar, Rumi, on the arrow holder. The vers refers to fearlessness, and morality of Hazrat i Ali, the first imam of Shi'a muslims and forth righteous Caliph of Sunni muslims, during his duel against Amr ibn Abdod, the most courageous man among Meccans, at battle of Trench:

از علی آموز اخلاص عمل
شیر حق را دان مطهر از دغل

Translation: learn from Ali Uprightness of deeds,
the Lion of Allah knows the difference between rightness and deception better.

My work is a portrayal of a ''Qorochi bashi'', commander of Qizilbash troops and commonly second highest rank in Safavid armies after ''Sepahsalar'' .

Weapons:
Shamishir: Persian curved long sabre, mostly used by cavalry units( the arm of Warrior covers it in the drawing)
Kard: almost 30 cm long Persian dagger used mostly during Safavid era by Persians and Indians.
Khanjar: 37 cm long curved Persian dagger, also used by Turks and Indians after 17A.D.
Composit Bow: turkish short bow used mostly by Ottomans and Safavid Persians with a rate of fire of almost 80 arrows per minute and range of 400 m.

Battle Engagements:
Ottoman-Safavid Wars, Mughal-Rajut Wars, Anglo-Afghan Wars, Afsharid Invasions of India.

That's a very good drawing! Splendid portrait.

One question I have would be the following: Is it not true that the Qizilbash were not followers of the Shia, but a largely Alevitic group? Or are the Qizilbash under Persian rule different from the groups under Ottoman rule?

Thank you . Well as far as i know Qizilbash in Iran were Shiite, despite Qizilbash originally came from southern parts of Turkey. Alevism has never been very wide spread in Iran, there are similar sects among Iranian Kurds, but there are not Alevites in Iran.

That's how I know it too, and their origin in Turkey may suggest that there are maybe both alevitic and shiite members of the Qizilbash Very enlightening, thanks for your knowledge!

Qizilbash originate from the southern parts of Turkey, there might be other theories about their origins but i guess it's the most valid one.
