Description I love Kimonos and I love playing with things that are inspired by the garment.

Historically, the Kimono has run through many, many iterations. The sleeves have been short or long, the usual square shape, or rounded in places, open to the tip or closed tightly at the wrist. The garment itself has been ground length, all the way up to just above the knee (although that is a Gi Top). Materials have consisted of silk (of course), a fine linen, brocades, jacquards, and special weaves and textures (however silk has always been the best).

Traditionally, a woman would wear several layers of Kimono, each one showing a little more, until the fine and full one that was layered on top. The richest women wore robes that dragged on the ground behind them, and it was said that the Emperess could wear 16 Kimonos, each one subtly affecting the colour of the others, so that she was never underdressed for any occasion.

Every Asian culture has had some form of a Kimono in its history.

There is so much flexibility in the Kimono that it is just a fun garment to play with.

I have another fascination with working with exhorbitant amounts of fabric. I found a Sari, that was 6.5 yards long, made of art silk ( a fine rayon ) that floated and flowed on my hands. Naturally, I had to play with it.

Materials:
6.5 Yards of Art Silk

Time: About 5 hours

Details:
Cut of material emphasizes the shifting of colours from dove grey to black
Zari work in gold thread
Every single hem and seam is rolled so that there are no raw edges
No collar so that it lies on the shoulders more naturally
Switched colours for the sleeves so
Matching belt
Body full of pleats for extra room to fit plus sized figures
Vent style sleeves with an extra ten inches of opening to allow air to flow
Full sleeves long enough to really show off the fabric
One size will pretty much fit all - at the same time if they are cozy

Inspired by all the wonderful kimonos I see in history books about Asia, and by the details of the sari I purchased.

Oooooooooooooooh.....my....HELL

Sure, I saw you're work when browsing the Stock gallery for a Kimono reference, and when I read that you sold your work, I went "Oh, game on!" Ran over here, ate up your website, ran through your gallery....

And now I'm kicking myself for being exponentially poor XD

You are exactly the type of person I could fall in love with. My eternal curse is that though I have so many ideas in my head and so many wild fancies for clothing...I've never had the time, patience, or most importantly, the talent with cloth that you so clearly do.

*deep sigh*

Damn, now I have to get more than a part time job at minimum wage.

Curses!

lol

Long story short: I love you, I love your work...and this has got to be my absolute favorite Kimono design EVER. The fact that you molded it from a sari just...blows my mind, honestly.

Keep up the great work, you've got talent and imagination in truck-loads!

You will forgive a small snicker, in addition to a major thank you, I hope. You have just described how I feel about pretty much all of my favorite artists that can draw - friendly jealousy and a wish that I could do that. Thank you so very much and I hope I keep making things that give you a grin!

If you did a tutorial on how to make this....I would write a story about it. You my dear are amazing.

I've never done a tutorial. There are so many wonderful tutorials on how to make Kimonos, that it seems like it would be kind of redundant. Thank you!

I can't find any that make sense like you do!! They're all 'Now insert your dixie in to the mash!' and it sounds like a sex raid! *hides*

*snicker* I hear your pain.

No guarantees because I am one of the worst culprits for the dixie mash, but I'll see what I can do.

Where I can buy kimono like this????

That one already sold, at A-Kon. However, if you have a color scheme that you really like, I will see what I can do to get you something similar. Please send me a note and I'll be happy to help you in any way I can.

it's wonderful. the colors are really subtle, and the gold just pops. was the fabric difficult to work with? it seems that floaty can be just as bad as too stiff to work with.

i admit, if i got my paws on a sari i'd probably run around the house playing dress up and never get to cutting it

Hrmmm....I bet you would be fun to take on a shopping trip to "Little India" here in Houston.

It actually wasn't as bad as it could have been to work with. It definitely had a tendency to try to run away, but I have a tendency to grab the fabric and strong-arm it. Of course it was like strong-arming gossamer at times.....

Thank you so much.

I didn't know there was such a place, especially in Houston! I've a few friends in NYC, but none of them know where the good fabric areas are. No use to me whatsoever!

And you wouldn't want to take me on a fabric trip, I'd probably get arrested for molesting the fabrics

Welll there was that time with me and the silk Jaquard, but after seven years it falls off your record, right?

Very beautiful! The gold is a very nice touch! I bet the rolled hems took you awhile to do!

HasturCTS In reply to PhotoByDesign [2006-01-04 19:52:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you.

The rolled hems always take a while to do - and I think that I'm pretty fast. *grin* It's just that I really don't like when a garment frays internally. The results are great though.

Wow, that is so kewl. Looks very floaty, like as soon as the wind picked up, the sleeves would billow like crazy

Actually, it does. Just opening the door creates enough of a breeze that it will float. And the sleeves! When you move while wearing it, they follow, but like someone slowed the film by about 5 frames per second. I've never seen anything like this fabric.

Thank you so much.

I'm no seamstress, though I wish I was... but this is amazing... stunning really.

From the fabrics you listed, it must flow beautifully…

I love kimonos too, my grandmother has a hand painted one she bought when she lived in Japan, I like to dress up in it when no one is in the house ¬¬...

*snicker* I've actually sold a couple of these to people that wore them out clubbing. A couple of my friends would wear a black shirt with black slacks and then the Kimono over it, open, without an obi. It looked absolutely delightful, especially when they swirled while dancing.

Thank you so much.
