Description
Name:
Alex Guerra
Age:
21 years
Stable:
Wind Echo Stables
Disciplines ridden:
jockey (both for our flat-racer TBs and our harness racer), also a background in Western riding.
Personality:
confident but not cocky, Alex can stare down the rowdiest horse and not appear fazed. He is sensitive and calm, always listening to what the horse is trying to tell him. Very rarely will you see him upset at something. He is generally a very positive person, trusting that things will sort themselves out. Don't let his gentle demeanor fool you, though - he's more than skilled enough to deal with an adrenaline-loaded Thoroughbred who decides to rear at the starting gate. He enjoys the little things in life, and is sort of the stable prankster (along with Cate). He's usually the most welcoming to guests, and is often one of the first people to greet visitors.
Favorite horse:
definitely Goldie.
History/story:
Alex was born and raised in Arizona, where he grew up around horses from the moment he could walk. His father ran a huge ranch, and Alex quickly learned to rope and ride alongside him. His first horse was a sweet Quarter Horse. He would routinely race his brothers across the open fields, relishing the feel of the wind in his face. This pastime quickly evolved into a passion.
As soon as he was old enough, Alex signed up to be a jockey. Around where he lived, Quarter Horse racing was common, so that's where he got his start. These horses were machines - steady mounts who could explode like a torpedo shot from a canon out of the starting gate, finishing in a race in oftentimes less than thirty seconds. He would ride in as many as ten races a day. The pay wasn't much, but Alex was doing what he loved, so he found that he didn't really care. He made many friends at the track, and they would sometimes ride together, teaching each other new things - one time someone showed the group how to use a sidesaddle, and another time someone hooked up a racing sulky and let everyone take a spin with a harness racer.
His parents, of course, wanted him to settle down and find a less dangerous occupation. He tried to tell them, gently, that that wasn't happening. For one, he loved being with the horses, the rush of racing, just the thrill of riding. And as far as a relationship . . . well, he'd never found anyone he connected with. Certainly not any of the girls he'd been set up with in the past. For now, it looked like a bachelor's life for him.
When his old employer fired him, Alex began searching for a new job. He found one all the way across the country - a stable in New Jersey, looking for a Thoroughbred and harness jockey. He was reluctant at first, but the market where he was was pretty stagnant at the moment, so he decided to take the chance and make the move.
The staff at the new stable - Wind Echo Stables - were all very welcoming. Alex quickly got into a routine with the horses, and had almost no problem handling the racers. Things were going good - and then they got better.
Alex ran into Aidan a week after he arrived, rinsing off horses on a hot day. They began talking idly, and Alex learned that Aidan was another jockey, with a specialization in carnivorous horses. Aidan was serious but kind, and offered to help Alex the next time he took the horses out for a run. And then he offered to give him a hand when Day picked up a stone in his hoof. And then Alex was there to help when it was time to feed Dreamer.
It didn't take a genius to see that they had chemistry. Alex had never really questioned why none of his past girlfriends had never worked out, but now . . . well, let's just say he had a theory.
Aidan was actually first to ask if Alex wanted to, y'know, go out with him. Alex very readily said yes. After that, it wasn't a long road before they were going steady. Alex initiated their first kiss, six months after their first conversation.
Seeing as they're both in rather hazardous lines of work (more so than other equestrians, I mean), they both worry about each other excessively. Alex has already gotten Aidan to swear up and down that he will never get eaten, or trampled, or gored, or anything by a carnivorous horse, and he's promised Aidan that he won't crash and/or die in a race. They both know that they really have no control over stuff like that, but promising made them feel better anyway.
Alex feels very much at home at WES - now he just hopes that nothing bad happens. To him, or to anyone else.
Extra Trivia:
- the racing silks he's wearing above? Those are the official colors of WES (navy blue, golden orange, and powder white).
- loves playing with Rigel in his spare time.
- currently in a relationship with fellow rider Aidan Kelly (so don't bother trying, you'll go exactly nowhere with that, and if Aidan finds out he will lock you in Dreamer's stall during feeding time).
- fairly religious - he always brings a tiny cross with him when he races, to give him good luck and so he comes home safe.
