To quote the PDSH Wiki [link] :

"USA started out as a young girl who died in 1777 from an illness she received while trying to deliver threads from the first American flag to her Uncle Sam during a snowstorm. However, she became the personification of the American flag and could be released from her locket now as a full-grown woman who possessed the Torch of Liberty, which could release energy beams as well as give USA flight and invulnerability. USA fought spies and saboteurs just like many other heroes of the time."

I was already mostly sold on this particular character when I read her description (hmm, a heroic ghost girl, now WHY would I glom onto THAT..?), but it was :iconson-goharotto: who, either directly or accidentally, put the idea of making her "an American Thor" into my head, and, after reading about characters like Fantoma, The Claw, and Mr. E, I started piecing together elements of a sort of "American pantheon" with young "Usa" here as the "Goddess of Patiotism." Her origin is somewhat revised as well, with her emergence occurring in 1977 during the Bicentennial Celebration instead of back in 1941; I was also toying with making her torch more mace-like (as you can see) and giving it the Mjolnir gimmick of returning to her when thrown.

As you can see if you click the link, I took a few liberties (*rimshot*) with her uniform, making her flag into an actual cape and using a design for a "mace-torch" I had left over from a long-defunct Gulf War superhero I'd made in high school.

It's still a pretty rough sketch, but I'm trying to get my art mojo working again without it switching off my writer mojo, like I used to do back in college.
