Ah yes, he was already my favorite in AoT, but the OVA really helped into seeing his development as a character...That smile really broke me TT He went through so much, even in season 2, with Petra :/

Guess he was left so dead inside when his friends in the backstory died that he didn't want to accept Petra's death... he seemed so at loss when he had to throw her body at the titans :c
And then he gave away her badge...like he felt he didn't even deserve that. I don't know why, but it potrayed well a loss of a loved one, the emptiness that makes you wish you had died too T_T

Surprisingly enough, the best that comes to mind is Bakuman (slice of life), mainly because of the characters.
Then maybe Code Geass? Gundam? Death Note? So many to name! >w<

Yeah that is the problem with this long running anime... Bleach, Naruto, Dragonball, maybe one piece as well but I only seen 15 episodes of it...I don't like one piece... The art style setts me off...
