Description ~ Svala the Guardian ~

“... For wherever the trees and plants were spreading their veins underneath the earth, there could Svala rise from the ground at will..."

(fragment from " Uruz. The Slave and the Trolls" *)
________________________________________________________________________________________

This is Svala, the third and last troll from my short-story quoted above, whose "spirit is one with that of those Northern woods". Svala means swallow in Old Norse. The other trolls:
Gnaga the Troll  - the first troll, meaning gnaw
Kljufa the Troll  - the second troll, meaning cleave

As you can notice in the illustrations, in my story I played with the folklore image of trolls, starting from the idea that a troll is a magic-wielder, able to shift shape in order to deceive their pray, becoming either human-like or closer to natural elements.

The Slave and the Trolls  is my story for the rune Uruz (ox), a symbol of physical strength, energy, untamed potential. It's one of my few writings containing fantasy elements, and it's a part of my series of stories dedicated to each of the runes of the Elder Futhark. To see how the Uruz's meaning is relevant here, check out the story! ^^

~ Drawn in graphite pencil on A3 paper, coloured in PS.

And behold, the essence of life itself, this one is one eerie looking troll! I like the description, it does symbolizes spirit, not of a singular identity, but the whole troll of the forest, or maybe the very heart of the forest itself.

The darker hue is a perfect match for Svala. I love this drawing!

Such a wonderful comment, that's exactly what I wanted to suggest! It's true that I presented a darker side of trolls, an image of nature's revenge on man. Other than that, they're not really evil, I'm sure they have their good moments ^^ I'm glad you like it, it means a lot to know this!

Most interesting take on the whole troll theme. I always thought the modern media depictions never gave them justice, making them like LOTR-tier ogres.
This one reminds me of some of the drawings of the wendigo, wich is an american folk mythos.

I'm glad this caught your eye That's true, I wanted to make something different while still maintaining the essence of the troll mythical figure. You're right! The wendigo didn't cross my mind while drawing it but now that you mention it, they do look similar... I like the wendigo, it looks deliciously spine-chilling, so I like the comparison ^^

Hmm I haven't, but it would be cool. Which part of Ragnarok would you like to illustrate?

Surt walking over the Bifröst bridge, you can really take your time to decide though, doing lots of stuff parallell atm, maybe till midsummer or something.
We could do like multiple scenes from ragnarök and then maybe make it a feature here on deviantart, could also share yours on my fb page.

Nice, that's a good idea! Yeah I need to think about it too, I also have a bunch of things planned for the near future. There's plenty of inspiring scenes in the myth though, will be fun to give it a go ^^

You weren't joking when you said he was the creepiest out of all of them! I love the darker tones here and the bluish filter you've used for the whole picture.

Very frightening. I love the skeletal outlines of the ribcage. That stuck out to me the most.

Haha I imagined him as the heart of the woods, so that's what I was trying to suggest with the ribcage with the light inside it and the roots from which he embodies. Thank you!!!

Great symbolism! I wonder if that means something about his life fluid/blood...

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2016-05-07 22:34:50 +0000 UTC]

Some kind of sap, I imagine. Would that mean that he'd have sap as blood even when he changes into human-like form? That would be interesting

charcoalfeather In reply to HelevornArt [2016-05-07 23:51:11 +0000 UTC]

I would think so. Weird question, but would the sap be edible?
