~ Svala the Guardian ~

“... For wherever the trees and plants were spreading their veins underneath the earth, there could Svala rise from the ground at will..."

This is Svala, the third and last troll from my short-story quoted above, whose "spirit is one with that of those Northern woods". Svala means swallow in Old Norse. The other trolls:
Gnaga the Troll - the first troll, meaning gnaw
Kljufa the Troll - the second troll, meaning cleave

As you can notice in the illustrations, in my story I played with the folklore image of trolls, starting from the idea that a troll is a magic-wielder, able to shift shape in order to deceive their pray, becoming either human-like or closer to natural elements.

* The Slave and the Trolls is my story for the rune Uruz (ox), a symbol of physical strength, energy, untamed potential. It's one of my few writings containing fantasy elements, and it's a part of my series of stories dedicated to each of the runes of the Elder Futhark.
