Here we go! Former Metal Sonic Shard and Nicole... So this is a pairing, apparently. And it's adorable! These pages are from early in this extra long issue - nicely setting up some Shard and Nicole friendship - as well as the villainy of Metal Sonic and the total bad-ass-ness of Shard rocketing in to confront his "little brother." After reading these comics for the first time, I'm so sad that we never got an answer to what happened to Shard as a result of the Super Genesis Wave. Was he wiped from existence? Is he alive, but not seen anywhere? Who knows. I loved shard :/

So much epicness... Shard must come back! He is the reason that I get into the comics and into the Sonic Franchise a lot more.
Also, Shard's visor/eyebrows (If you can call them that) can transform at will?

Nicole has never really showed ANY interest towards Shard. She onlyΒ cared for him because he was about to destroyed by Metal Sonic because he was a friend.Β Shard is supposedly the same original Metal Sonic that tried to kill Sonic and his friends. In a sane mind, this would cause some distrust to him and all the Freedom Fighters, including Nicole. Even when he said he went clean he would still be distrusted.Β I would only call these two a lovely couple, IF these two had any romantic or tenderness moments together, like REAL kissing and Β hugging, but I never saw anything of that, sorry. It's too much of a lame clone pairing of Sonally anyway. And you Herms,Β failed to see how bad the writing is because of Flynn.

they are both AIs just learning about themselves and emotion. so they wouldn't understand organic things like hugging and kissing right away.

There is barely any interaction between them at all, and when they do interact, it's purely platonic. ToΒ be fair, they did have an interesting dynamic. It was cool to actually see Nicole with another AI, because that hadn't really been done before. Β But in the long run, that was kind of an issue in that's one of the only reasons people ship them, because they're both AIs. They had personalities that were almost too similar, which made them kind of generic and almost like robotic Sonally. Β Not to mention that Nicole seemed pretty oblivious to Shard's crush on her, and he was the only one confirmed to have those feelings. Β Again, as friends, I could appreciate that they could relate over their pasts, but as a pairing, they just seemed kind of forced and too convenient. Β

They ship them because the fact they are both AIs MAKES THEM more relatable to each other. How are their personalities too similar? I always felt they were total opposites. And just because it's one-sided doesn't make it not apparent (sonamy for instance) But it's all fan interpretation anyways. You're free to dislike that pairing.

Nicole and Shard are just too easy and mundane. A robot and a computer program coming together and bonding over their learning about humanity, particular ly when they wind up mimicking the Sonic/Sally relationship. Tails and Nicole would be the more entertaining coupling I think, precisely because their inexperience would cause them to head down odd roads.

I want Shard to return in the reboot. Even if you change up his color scheme or design, at least keep his personality. Maybe as a renegade prototype of Metal's current personality program.

I've been wondering whether or not this pairing will remain in the comics after the timeline shift. Even artificial beings need a little love, and I would hate to see Nicole remain as the lonely girl in the group if Shard was erased from existence. Say it ain't so, Matt!
Onnnnn another note, I was wondering if you could help me out with something. Shard still exists in the new universe, right? Because he was probably my favorite side character out of them all. (Not hindered by the fact that ever since I read his original demise when I was a kid, I'd always dreamed he'd come back as a good guy.)
Since the backstory has been retconned to be more like the games, does he still exist?

I did enjoy this scene quite a bit, though I have a feeling with the genesis wave it may be mmot as then shard wouldnt have been rebuilt yet, however he may get rebuilt for Countdown to chaos. Admitedly I am also curious on where Mighty, Nack and Ray are going to show up next...

They make an awesome pairing. Β For some reason, this pairing reminds me of Sonic's parents...

I really liked that issue, and Shard is a surprisingly break out character to me.Β When I first heard of the concept of a good guy version of Metal Sonic I thought it sounded a little fan-ficy but he ended up becoming one of my favorites.
