Description Chompin' at the bit, one of Italy's ETR 500 trainsets sits at Roma Termini. Thankfully, the Italians have the sense to give their high speed trains an interesting name, even if it's a ripoff of another well-named high speed train...Eurostar (Italia).

Incidentally, the Italians also gave their high speed lines a good name. Instead of LGV (Line of Grand Velocity), SFS (SchnellFahrStrecke), or High Speed Line, the Italians call the fastest routes "Diretissima." Great marketing!

"Direttissima" is actually the name of three old lines (Roma-Napoli and Bologna-Firenze built in 1920s and 1930s, and Firenze-Roma built in late 1970s).
Of these three, only the latter was a "high speed" line, built for speeds up to 200km/h.
The new and true italian high speed lines are simply called "TAV" (Treno ad Alta VelocitΓ , High Speed Train) or Alta VelocitΓ  (High Speed)... not a very interesting name indeed. XD
The ETR 500 trainsets are changing their colorscheme and name (this grey colorscheme by Giugiaro is actually pretty depressing...), and they're now called Frecciarossa (Red Arrow). ^_^
I'm not a high speed trains fan, but the Frecciarossa looks pretty good, especially because the main Trenitalia coloscheme is the XMPR, which is VERY depressing!

It looks so much like acela amtrak. A bit critique : The train station need some extra cleaning service.

Yeah, most everything in Italy looks like it would be a whole lot more beautiful if it just were to have more janitors on staff.

Man, that train just screams "fast!". That, and the right-of-way looks like crap.

Yeah, it's interesting how disparate the quality of the track structure is just between the two tracks visible in this picture. Roma Termini is a stub-end station, so there's not much need to have the bumper-post end of the tracks in pristine condition...

Thanks. Now, if only I had ridden it. We waited too long to make our reservations. If we had booked two weeks earlier, it would have been cheaper to take the night train down there, then taken the Eurostar Italia to Milan, a Cisalpino to Basel, and an ICE to Mannheim.

Nice shot, though if the open access operator that that guy from Ferrari and stuff has set up goes ahead, they will have Alstom AGV sets to run...

Mr-Uhrig In reply to CJSutcliffe [2010-06-17 18:59:58 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you mean the company NTV (Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori), isn't it?
They named the AGV train "Italo".
Operations will begin around 2011.

Well, that'll make railfanning in Italy even more interesting.

It will, as said open access operator will be the AGVs launch customer, showing SNCF how it's done no doubt...

This shot is amazingly focuse... everything is coming from a specific point in the photo and surging forward, which is a great effect.

There's nearly always something to take away from that, but you nailed it.
