Sometimes life isn't fair.Mike Wieringo, a comic book artist and all around great guy, passed away this month at 44 from a massive heart attack. He was not only too young for this as such a health-conscious fellow, but was also an inspiration to many artists and will be greatly missed. He was active in online communities and even was a member here at DA:
Dean Trippe is hosting a Mike Wieringo Week as a tribute at Project Rooftop and asked for submissions of redesigns of Bart Allen, a Flash character from DC that Wieringo helped co-create. I decided to use a pic I had drawn of my friend Chip's character, Colorfast, as he was a huge Impulse fan and was inspired by Wieringo to create it. I recolored and retooled it here as an alternate design of Bart Allen/Impulse.
Rest in peace, Mike Wieringo.

'Ringo's death was a big blow in our household, as you can imagine. I'm not sure why I got so emotionally invested in the death of a comic creator that I didn't really know, but he was someone whose work we followed, and who we'd met at conventions (we even have autographs and original sketches by him), so yeah, his death hit me hard. It doesn't hurt that he was just 44, and I'm turning 40 in only 2 years. Bummer, and a reality check, to be sure. But he was a huge talent that I'll miss. (I think his Fantastic Four run is the most I've read of that book.)
I'm sure Chip will get a big kick out of seeing this revision of yours. He looks quite spiffy. I still haven't made it to the Project Rooftop Impulse tribute. Maybe today.

I think the original Impulse costume is as close to perfection as it gets, which is why I think Trippe's idea is a little weird, but I really like your costume concept, actually.

Yeah, the Flash family costumes are some of the best designs ever. Just great visuals.
Trippe gives some good reasons in the intro to Wieringo Week...
"If you knew βRingo, or followed his blog, you know how much he enjoyed drawing events, costume redesigns, and teen superheroes, so we at Project: Rooftop wanted to honor his memory by combining all of those things into one fun event. Having known Mike, and spent the last week sifting through all the entries, Iβm pretty dang sure he would get a big kick out of seeing each one."

I like doing cell shading because it's a quick, fun pop art style. But I should really try some more involved pieces of coloring soon before I get too lazy.

Yeah, Tellos was an amazing piece of work and it makes me extra sad that Wieringo was planning on returning to the characters in the near future.
