Description I just wanted to do a straight up portrait study. Nothing fancy. Not so much capturing the character as just trying to get a likeness of Jackie Earle Haley in the role.
I thought the source would be interesting to work with since the flat expression reminded me of back in the day when I used to draw models from life when I was in college. I always enjoyed the pure exploration of facial features--it's my favorite part of drawing...there's so much discovery involved.

Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm digging it. It took far longer than I had intended. Hurm.

Pastel on tea-stained paper.

P.S.
I find it really interesting that so many people have commented on characterization despite my above explanation.

I actually like that you didn't make him lo0k disgruntled! In the bo0k, there are parts where he actually has that vacant, despondent, somewhat distrought, depressed, lonely-eyed lo0k to him. I like that because it reminds us that he's not just a terminally pissed off badass vigilante who can take on hordes of enemies using only his environment and his own funky self as a weapon (though he knows how to use practically any kind of firearm). He's a tormented man (tough mind, soft heart) who identifies with those who've been victimized.

I think this is fascinating because with Walter, nothing is ever blank, even if there's nothing distinctive in his facial expression. The cogs are always turning, and he's always in some kind of mental wrestling match of sorts. But even though you believe this to be a blank expressio on his face, you captured the hidden emotion down underneath perfectly.

Even if you weren't trying to capture the character, it still reminds me of him. Because of his expression, it's sad in a way. This is beautiful, I love the eyes and hair, so many colors.
Great job

Great job! You really captured the angles and details of Haley as Kovacs. Although, I have to agree with the other comments, he does look so lovably sad.

Even with your disclaimer. I see this as the little boy hurt and confused still lurking in the deapths of his heart that brought him to the state of his being when he told Nightowl... "...Never Compromise your Principles... Even in the face of Armagedon."
He was my favorite character. In and out of his "Face"

This is the vulnerability that he could not let the rest of the world see.

It's a wonderful pice.
I love it.

Now, I never thought I would ever come across a Kovacs picture that would actually appeal to me. But lo and behold, here it be! I think the flatness of his expression is what makes him stand out and get responses about "characterization". There's nothing to obscure the facial elements, so it looks nice and smooth.

Great job!

I know, but my inner fangirl is yelling at me that Rorschach should not be cute! I mean, look at those puppy eyes! They have no business being on his face!

But you did an awesome job and my inner artist is flipping my fangirl the bird.

hever In reply to Draconis-Wyrm [2009-04-05 06:30:04 +0000 UTC]

If it eases your mind at all, technically, it's not a portrait of Rorschach.
And while he has sad eyes, contrary to others, I don't really have a problem with it since anger and sadness stem from the same place. After all, psychodynamic theory suggests that depression is anger turned inward...and a lot of anger goes hand in hand with defense of projection (attributing the flaws of oneself onto the external world). So he may seem out of character, but who's to say this portrait isn't the capture of a mere moment of introspection?

Draconis-Wyrm In reply to hever [2009-04-05 06:38:40 +0000 UTC]

WORDS WORDS WORDS

Yeah, it's a picture of Rorschach. It's post littlegirlmutilation, isn't it?

Also, he never had this face in the book (or movie so far as I saw), even when he was getting 'sploded. It was always angry.

HOWEVER IF IT'S A PICTURE OF JACKIE EARLE HALEY PLAYING RORSCHACH THEN IT'S COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. I noticed he put a lot more emotion into it then there should have been, but it was fine.
