Description This is the first attempt I feel is worth posting after getting an excellent introduction into the world of rotational fractals from 'Halcyon83 via his live tutorial this afternoon (log of the event as well as a flame pack are found here [link] ). Please check out 'Halcyon83's gallery [link] if you really want to see what truly beautiful art someone can produce that really has mastered this style.

Thanks very much! It's pretty rewarding for the frist real attempt at a rotational style.

Been watching these the past few days.... sadly I missed the tut but when I get half a chance I'll give it the once over. Gitte has been knocking out a few nice ones too

Nice Job once again and I love the colour choice

I was fortunate to catch it - right up to minutes before it started I didn't think I was going to be able to attend. But fortune smiled on me. The good news is that basics seem pretty straight forward though there is a lot of nuance to achieve good results (as is pretty much alwasy the case...). Get hold of the tutorial log and the starter flame pack and start playing around.

Will do - I already bookmarked Haclyons page... been busy pre-release testing a marble tutorial for UF... Might get round to Halcyons tut Thursday or so....

Love this...precise and delicate. Great gradient as well. I had a quick play with rotational style in 3D and wasn't convinced it added much, as this style already has depth.

Thanks very much! I'm pretty pleased with it but there's still plenty of room for improvement and exploration. The gradient is a favorite of mine that I got from =LadyBlacksword [link]

I've also thought about pushing the rotational into the 3D realm since I've been playing with the 3D hack a fair amount recently. Was just discussing it with 'Halcyon83 a couple of days ago and I agree that with what I've seen so far going 3D with these actually seems to detract from it. One notable exception (at least IMO) is some of the pieces that 'DragonWinter has done like [link] were the rotational get's a neat twist in 3D. For nowI think I'll keep the rotational stuff in the 2D realm...

Yup, you've got a point about DragonWinter's work. I need to focus on getting it right in 2D first!

One tip though. I can still see a little grain (because of the white background). Try rendering at a higher quality if possible and/or reduce the gamma values a little.

Ah grain - truly a challenge to eliminate/reduce effectively with a white background. Following your input I played around last night with higher quality settings (very slight improvement) as well as reducing the gamma - the later worked but when I got the grain to moslty disappear I lost a fair amount of subtle detail and the red bloomed/oversaturated in the center. Obviously a lot of trial and error invloved. Will see if some intermediate settings will work as a good compromise. The real drag is that you can't really see how well these will look until you've gone through the complete process and view the final exported jpeg. Also wish there was a way to zoom out in the post process render window... Ah well - no one said this should be easy (if it was it would diminish the results we produce).

Thanks again for opening up this variety of fractal - I've admired your stuff for a while and always wondered what the "secret" was. Not to complicate things but have you tried playing with these in the the 3D version, just curious?

hey there

i'm glad to hear you're really making efforts to improve, i can appreciate that.
as for the 3D stuff, i myself haven't tried it yet since i don't like 3D-fractals and therefore will never even download it. i know a few people who actually did try 3D on rotationals: =Khan71 and `DragonWinter - check out their latest stuff and you might agree with me that 3D-ing a rotational only takes away from it, at least that's my opinion.

Just took a look at both Natalie's and Christopher's stuff and I have to admit that I'm more in favor of some of Natlaie's - 3Ding in her style introduces some neat twists and warps to the piece while not making it seem really 3D (I've used a similar approach to warping a couple "standard" styles as well). Chris's is a more literal 3D and I don't think it really adds to the piece - it's interesting but I think leaving it 2d woudl have been better. All just my opinions.

I'm having a bit of fun with the 3D but trying to produce stuff that's (hopefully) unique - as a counter balance to the "new and shiny tool" I do feel that there is a beauty and simple elegance to the well executed rotational - expecially when executed with your skill...

Very nice fractal. I like how you've chosen the white background as it makes the moire pattern (thin wires) stand out. The glooming centre is well extecuted too, it gives this piece a heart, a focal point and make in interesting to look at. The overall composition and flow are top notch! Keep up!

Thanks very much - will continue to strive for the level of excellence in this style that you're already set (still got quite a ways to go but keep pushing)...
