Description EDIT: I actually don't think this idea has been done before!! I was afraid it might have and that I'd be totally unoriginal by doing this, but nope. I've seen it done with Wolf Link and Amaterasu from Okami though, with Link being Yin and Ammy Yang, which also fits. Anyway, I think Yin and Yang fits Twilight Princess in general, given the "dual nature" theme of the game – two realms, two princesses (Zelda and Midna), two forms of both Link and Midna (Wolf Link and Human Link, Imp Midna and Twili Midna), etc. So it's relevant.

This is the Zelda fanart I was talking about!! I haven't done TP art for some time. But since I'm done with submitting school work for now, let's do this. At least this one's got Link and Midna!! And it may not be a comic which is what you usually like best, but it's something. Just to show you that I haven't quit making Zelda art, just put it on hold for a while. I want some variation.

I think I came up with this idea about 2 years ago. Yeah, I'm late. I was just afraid that this would turn out cheesy-looking. And maybe it still is, LOL!! But I had to do it anyway because it was so perfect. Someone once pointed out that the relationship between Link and Midna in Twilight Princess was like Yin and Yang. Which is actually very accurate. I mean, light and twilight, day and night, male and female? Are you seeing it now? Which makes Midna Yin and Link Yang. Not to mention that when seen in profile, their hoods have this shape. So I decided to make this.
I drew this in black and white so that it would become more obvious, and also because I wanted to get some monochrome practice. I love black and white ink drawings, but I also love coloring stuff using different techniques. I just thought this idea would go better in black and white.

In this context, Link, as said, is Yang – the white, male counterpart, symbolized by daytime and positivity, while Midna is Yin – the black, female counterpart, symbolized by nighttime and negativity. Basically this works, even though Yang is said to be active and Yin to be passive. Link is definitely active (even though he's a sleepyhead), but I'm not sure if Midna is passive. Sure, she makes Link do most of the work, but she's very determined and headstrong. Whether or not you like to think of Link and Midna as a romantic couple, they're still a very good team and wouldn't be able to work without one another. They complement each other. Link does most of the fighting while Midna helps by using her intelligence in their cooperation (not that Link doesn't need to think a lot as well) and using magic. I think Midna makes Link work for her because she's a princess and she likes treating people like servants (at least in the beginning). Like Zelda said, shadow and light are two sides of the same coin – one cannot exist without the other. I guess that goes for Link and Midna in the game too, or Midna and Zelda, depending on how you see it. Practically this could have been done with Midna and Zelda too, but it wouldn't have worked as well composition-wise, and as you know, I'm a shipper who likes drawing these two together. Also Link is male which works better with the symbolism here and – i really need to stop talking soon, don't I!? Soon, soon … Well, a good description of the Yin/Yang relationship might be that they complete each other perfectly and definitely belong together, not apart, yet they can never be one and the same or mix with each other. Which Midna pointed out in TP by saying "Light and shadow can't mix as we all know". Sad but true.
Also, Yin has a piece of Yang in her and Yang a piece of Yin in him. (You know the little black dot in the white area and white dot in the black area). I tried to show this by coloring Link's pupil black while I colored Midna's black with a small white dot in it. This is hardly even visible but perhaps you can see it if you download this and zoom in.

The reason Link is to the left and Midna to the right is – aside from Link being left-handed – I usually draw him to the left and Midna to the right when they are in the same picture because Link is the protagonist, or narrator possibly (even though he never talks, the story is seen from his perspective), and he symbolizes the familiar stuff, home, in a way. While Midna symbolizes the unknown and the mysterious. It is a well-known policy practiced by Western artists to draw the main character to the left and the mystery, the uncertain, the villain or stranger, to the right. Also I didn't draw Link "on top" and Midna "at the bottom" because I think he is superior to her. Quite the opposite, since she's more bossy and he's more submissive. (Obviously, he is very strong physically and mentally, but Midna still tends to take this role in their relationship). I just did it because it wouldn't have worked if I did it the other way around – you see, Midna's hood needs to point upwards and Link's downwards. But I also think that the two sides switching places sometimes and giving each other space is what Yin and Yang is all about, so it works for me. Basically the point is that the two sides are capable of coexisting in harmony.

Anyway, this doesn't even have to be taken as a pairing picture, it just shows how shadow and light work well together, with Midna and Link symbolizing the two sides. It could be a depiction of their friendship too which they have no matter what.

Made using pens. I got an awesome new one that's perfect for filling in black areas and that can also draw lines with varying width. The best part is that it's waterproof and exactly the same shade of black as my other pens, and it doesn't even shine through the paper or leave stains. How great is that!!! I've been looking for one of these like forever!!! (It was kind of expensive, but worth it!!) Midna may look a bit strange but she looks better if you zoom in. Anyway, the main point of this was the symbolism, which I think I've explained pretty thoroughly now xD Overall, I think this turned out good. I'm especially satisfied with the shading since I've always loved the look of line shading which is often used in for example comics. I liked getting an opportunity to practice using this shading technique. (I've used it a few times before, like here: [link]

Hope you like and that my long description didn't annoy you too much xD I just like symbolism a lot. I have more Zelda-related ideas (fanart and comics) to draw sooner or later ^^
