Twelve hours later, Martha was able to leave her lamp again. She couldn’t wait to see Sami again. A quick rub of his lamp later, Sami appeared. “Why didn’t you summon me yesterday?” he immediately asked. It sounded like an accusation.

“I wished I could have seen you yesterday, but something happened. I…” Martha started to justify herself.

“We better talk inside.” Sami interrupted her. Both genies turned into smoke and entered Sami’s lamp. Sami sat down on his armchair while Martha took a place on the sofa.

“I couldn’t see you yesterday because of my current master.” Martha explained. “He invited me to the opera and when we returned, he insisted on walking me to my lamp. I didn’t want him to see you, so I had to return to my lamp immediately. Then I was locked up for 12 hours.”

“Wait a second! He invited you to the opera?” Sami asked, astonished. “Since when do masters do something like that?”

“I told you that there are nice humans too!” Martha replied.

“Did you enjoy the evening?” Sami asked. Martha was so surprised by this question that she blushed. Sami turned his face from her. “Listen, it’s ok if you want to spend your time with other humans rather than with me. But please, be honest and tell me.” he said.

“Sami, I’m a genie now, not human anymore.” Martha replied.

“Are you really sure about that?” Sami asked. He sounded disappointed and accusing at the same time.

“I… I…” Martha stammered. She wasn’t quite sure herself, anymore. “Yesterday evening was a total mess. Sami, this master is strange. I don’t know yet what he’s up to but I got a bad feeling. He wished for two opera tickets and then, he commanded me to go there with him. And there was nothing I could do about it.”

“Here we go! So you had no choice in going there. I understand! I’m a slave too”, Sami replied, though sounding bitter. “I’m just … surprised, that you’re still so much human.”

‘What was wrong with Sami?’ Martha wondered. “Sami, sometimes I feel like I am torn apart between the two worlds. I just need more time to find out what I am.”

“Don’t worry, Martha. I’ll give you all the time you need.” Sami replied.

Martha walked over to Sami to embrace him. Suddenly, her body turned transparent. Someone was summoning her. “I’ll get back to you as soon as possible, Sami!” Martha said before she vanished.

Adam greeted Martha with a smile. “Hello my beautiful genie! Did you enjoy yesterday evening?” he greeted her.

“Listen, Master.” Martha replied. “You are a kind person. But I’m only interested in granting your three wishes.”

“Relax, Martha! I’m not a whip cracker. You would like to be with me.” Adam said.

Now, Martha became angry. “Now listen carefully: I’m not interested in you. Not now and not in the future!” she yelled at Adam.

“I see!” Adam replied. All kindness was gone from his voice. ”I usually get what I want. Who’s the current owner of your lamp?” Adam asked.

“No, Master! You won’t hurt M. Sprüngli with your wish!” Martha replied, full of fear.

“Don’t worry. I’m just gonna buy your lamp from him!”

“That won’t work. He won’t sell my lamp!” Martha replied.

“Then I’ll wish that he will sell me your lamp.” Adam said.

“That’s impossible. I’d have to mess with his mind. I’m not allowed to do that!” Martha insisted, now in sheer panic.

“I know that you are not allowed. But I insist!” Adam replied and pushed his will on Martha’s lamp.

Instantly, Martha felt a terrible pain from her bracelets. With all her strength, she fought against the urge to grant this wish. As the pain became unbearable, she finally succumbed. “W…wish granted!” she said and blinked.

“Good. I’ll have a talk with Monsieur Sprüngli now. Now return to your lamp.” Adam ordered in an ice-cold voice.

Martha burst into tears and returned to her lamp.
