Un perezoso gigante se arrepiente de haber elegido ésta charca en particular para darse un baño de lodo, al verse atacado por hambrientas sanguijuelas gigantes. Éste doodle está inspirado por un animal que aún existe actualmente- la sanguijuela gigante del Amazonas (Haementeria ghilianii), que puede llegar a crecer hasta 50 cm de longitud, y tiene una proboscis de 10 cm, muy a propósito para perforar la piel y chupar la sangre de animales grandes. La sanguijuela ataca a una variedad de presas, desde anfibios cuando es pequeña hasta capibaras y caimanes cuando es adulta, pero parece preferir la sangre de mamiferos. ¿Se trata de una reliquia del Pleistoceno y más allá, que evolucionó para aprovechar la abundancia de megafauna y que sobrevivió después de que ésta desapareciera casi por completo?

A giant ground sloth regrets having chosen this pond in particular to take a mud bath, finding itself under attack by hungry giant leeches. This doodle is inspired by an animal that still exists today, the Amazonian giant leech (Haementeria ghilianii), which can grow to an incredible 50 cm long, and has a 10 cm proboscis to pierce the skin and suck the blood of large animals. The leech atatcks a variety of prey, from amphibians when its young and small, to capybara and caiman as an adult, but it is seemingly quite fond of mammal blood. Is this a relic of the Pleistocene and beyond that evolved to take advantage of the abundant South American megafauna, and which survived after the recent near-complete extinction of it?
