Description Here's my latest. I'm trying to get back into Spaceart/Terraspace.

This one's done with GeoControl, Vue, 3dsMax and Photoshop.

Enjoy!

Edit: Changed the clouds. Hope these ones are more realistic.

The clouds look way better now!

By the way, is that Noitami (the small green moon) in the background?

Thanks. Yep, it is. Let's say recycled.

Thanks.I really love that little moon. Is the planet it orbit's a super-earth? You know, like Gliese 581 c?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to BinaryRising [2009-02-21 21:35:53 +0000 UTC]

I haven't really thought about it. But isn't Gliese 581 c not supposed to be just a big lump of rock? Have to look that up.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BinaryRising In reply to hoevelkamp [2009-02-22 15:27:37 +0000 UTC]

Well yeah Gliese 581 c is a gigantic ball of rock, it might also be a super-venus. That's if it has an atmosphere of course.

Gliese 581 d is probably habitable if it has an green house effect. That makes the gliese 581 system the most important solar system discovered, for now.

For the clouds you can try from photographs with manipulating them properly (could took a lot of time tough)

Vue 6 or Vue 7 doesn't matter - there's still years & years of struggle to found a formula which is able to create realism of nature already has.

I've seen several pictures rendered in Vue 7 and they have clouds to die for. Has to work somehow. Or, the artists used stock clouds like you suggest.

Hm, not digging the little moon in the middle.. it seems to close, as if it's hovering a few hundred feet off the surface there..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to Durandal-Thoth [2009-02-19 14:17:46 +0000 UTC]

Maybe true. I leave it anyway though. I wanted the planet and moon very crisp and contrasted. Think of a very thin atmosphere which isn't disturbing the view on the moon and planet as the earth atmosphere does.

Thanks a lot! GeoControl is a windows application. You can get it here: [link] There's even a trial version available.

Seeing that canyon makes me want to get GeoControl! how many terrains are there? or is it one huge one? the large planet seems like it would have the same kind of landscape

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2009-02-19 11:22:37 +0000 UTC]

Hi! Yeah, GeoControl is a mighty tool. You can always install the trial version and play around with it for 30 days. For this canyon I used the same terrain, created with option seamless, 25 times. Like a big puzzle.

Say, you're a Vue user too, any tips about the clouds? They always come out unrealistic in the end. Is there a secret button or something?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to hoevelkamp [2009-02-19 11:31:36 +0000 UTC]

It depends on what Vue your'e using...the Vue 7 clouds are considerably better than the Vue 6 ones, which is why I rarely used the clouds when I had Vue 6, but rather postworked them in. in Vue 6, it's hard to get them much more sharply-detailed than these here the first time I used Vue 7's new spectral clouds was here [link] and as you can see, they are much more sharply-detailed

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2009-02-19 11:43:33 +0000 UTC]

That's definitely better looking than anything I got out of Vue so far. Just made the step to 7 too. Should have used spectral clouds. Yep, should have. Thanks.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to hoevelkamp [2009-02-19 11:48:47 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool, so you DO have Vue 7 in that case, use the Spectral II clouds if you wnat them sharp, detailed and bubbly for wide open skies typical of fine weather scenery. While the classic Spectral clouds and their more "fluffy" look are still useful, but perhaps for simulating cold/rainy/windier weather

even so, I normally paint a little over my clouds in PS to bring them up to standards, but that's not always necessary

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2009-02-19 12:46:14 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the tips. I've got the new Vue only since the day before yesterday. I'll try to get better results for this piece. The canyon needs fitting clouds, don't you think?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromattix In reply to hoevelkamp [2009-02-19 22:23:17 +0000 UTC]

I think the Canyon - believe it or not, also contributed to the (now former) clouds you had looking unrealistic...since the Canyon is so much more realistic than 99% of the Vue scenes on dA (mine included) it then made everything else seem obviously 3D by comparison whilist the Canyon would appear to be a photo-manip to the untrained eye. Even if you added trees in there, normally Vue trees are great, but the canyon would probably shame those very same trees if you included any

hoevelkamp In reply to Chromattix [2009-02-21 21:38:14 +0000 UTC]

See, I love GeoControl! Aaaand it's not too pricy. I think you're right, the levels of realism differ. I think I'll have to reinstall the Dreamscape plugin for 3dsmax. The clouds in there are nicer.

In Vue you can render pretty nice clouds. And I don't agree that the clouds are big problem in your pictures. The Zoo Planet had amazing cloud map. Just see the athmo rendering options in Vue

hoevelkamp In reply to aRchAng3lZz [2009-02-19 12:43:44 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. In the Zoo Planet the clouds are way better. But... They are rendered in 3dsmax. Which is a totally different process than the one in Vue. Atm I'm reworking this picture. Must have better clouds.

hoevelkamp In reply to aRchAng3lZz [2009-02-19 21:16:22 +0000 UTC]

In the original size the clouds look better than here. There's some quality loss during downsizing and during postwork (to get the colors right).

Thanks. You're right about the clouds. I just don't get it how to create good looking clouds with Vue.
