Description
I recently got commissioned by a good friend to come up with a detailed depiction of a lesser known, but none the less intriguingly grotesque cryptids from American folk-lore: the mysterious Van Meter-Visitor. While often times compared with the more well known 'Moth Man', this weird creature was said to haunt the small wild-west town of Van Meter long before John A Keel could ever write the novel, which would one day give rise to a certain Richard Gere flick! Personally I find the Van Meter Visitor to be quite a bit more interesting than good old butterfly-lad, both in terms of design and surrounding lore, but cool looking depictions of the creature seem to be a rare commodity online. To celebrate this year's Spooktober I set out to change that and the result of my affords is what you are currently looking at ( not this text-box, but the actual drawing up above it ). While in most videos on the topic, a selection of which I will try to link beneath this description, describe the Visitor as a large humanoid with bat-like wings, the beak of a parrot, a single, glowing horn and legs which are bent like the ones of a kangaroo, save for the tree-taloned bird-feet, various fellow artists tend to depict the creature as some sort of flying dinosaur. That's of course quite silly, since dinosaurs did neither possess the ability to emit beams of light from their horns, nor immunity to bullets, both of which are features commonly ascribed to the Van Meter Visitor. That's why My version of the creature is trying to evoke more of an eldritch hell-spawn vibe. I hope this piece will serve to introduce you to one of the lesser known but more interesting monsters of American legend - these days everybody seems to just focus on that one chunky, shaved Lorax looking fuck, who tends to be sighted next to running helicopter-engines.
