Description Taken on Monday a South Bank, Middlesbrough, Teeside.

This 42 ton slag ladle was used a a Bessemer plant which used to stand about 800 yards from where it now stands in the grounds of South Tees Business Park, as a memorial to the industry that was lost in the area.

There is even some of the original slag on the cradle under the crucible.

It was when it was in use, sadly though, because of neglect when it was last used, it now has a crack in the crucible, but it still makes a great reminder of the industry that once thrived here.

That's remarkable. And remarkably huge!

It is rather large, though not as large as the molten steel crucibles, which I would estimate as being about twice the size of this.

Lovely... How would it have been tipped Bob?

The "block" structure on the far end, is actually a motor, presumably electric, though it could also be hydraulic, which turned the whole crucible as well as moving it to one side or the other, so that the slag tipped a safe distance from the track.

The gearwheel you see at the front rolls on the geartoothed(?) mount. So the whole crucible moves to the side and tipps. Quite an interesting engineering feat!
Also look at the crack at the base of the crucible. It crtacked due to the cooling. In use the whole crucible would have to be heated before the molten slag was poured in!

That's basically what I explained to

There's also a cog attached to the motor at the far end, which moves along a similar rack, otherwise it would would not tip evenly.

I had noticed the crack, and I imagine that resulted from cooling after it's final use.
