Description The Symbol for a War..

Although the C-141s had flown many military and humanitarian missions, none was more significant than the mission flown by the Hanoi Taxi, the aircraft on display. This C-141 (serial number 66-0177) airlifted the first American prisoners of war to freedom from Gia Lam Airport in Hanoi, North Vietnam, on Feb. 12, 1973. The Hanoi Taxi flew two missions into Hanoi, carrying out 78 POWs and two civilian returnees to the Philippines, and four missions from the Philippines to the United States, carrying 76 ex-POWs.

Afterward, the Hanoi Taxi continued flying missions around the world for three more decades and logged more than 40,000 flying hours. During its lifespan, the Hanoi Taxi underwent many changes. Originally built as a C-141A model, its fuselage was lengthened and aerial refueling capability was added in the early 1980s. The USAF redesignated it as a C-141B. Later, the aircraft had its wings strengthened and was converted to a C-141C by the installation of advanced avionics. In 2002 the Hanoi Taxi received its final programmed depot maintenance. It was also repainted as it appeared when it went to Hanoi in 1973 -- except for the Red Cross which was used to show it was carrying hospital patients. The Hanoi Taxi flew in these markings for the next four years instead of the standard paint scheme in recognition of its important history.

In May 2004 the Hanoi Taxi again tapped the timelines of history when Maj. Gen. Edward J. Mechenbier, himself a POW repatriated from Vietnam, flew it back to Vietnam to repatriate the remains of two American service members killed in action. The Hanoi Taxi was flown to the museum in May 2006.

(Taken from Dayton's own website).
Shot taken of course at The USAF Museum, Dayton, Ohio..  This aircraft is now not on display and being prepared for show in the new building under construction..

I'm glad it's getting preserved. There are those that would glaze over it, but it is as much of a reminder of our past and what should not be the future as any fighter or bomber.

There's an argentine movie about the war called "Blessed by Fire", but indeed I can't think of a british one.

I have heard of that, and quite right too.. I have read books about the pilots that flew Argentine aircraft as told by them..
No films about it here, thee was a T.V. drama about the trauma etc.. A million books about as well.. But no film..

That's pretty bad that the Falklands hasn't been made into a movie. We got Black Hawk Down even though that was a political mess and normally it would be shunned by the government.

Black Hawk Dow is a very fine movie I have it here.. (I have allot of very under rated movies about various conflicts - have you seen Siege Of Firebase Gloria? The best Vietnam movie never seen.. )
No, no conflict (War) should be shunned, we are very good at that.. Suez, Falklands, Almost any Colonial war take your pick, but very good at pulling ourself apart..

I actually saw Firebase Gloria for the first time in a very long time about a month ago. It's not the best Vietnam movie ever, but it communicates many sentiments effectively and is fairly entertaining.

I saw it ages ago on cable here in the UK then it vanished, it was never on disc.. Still isn't.. I had to order the bluray from the States to see it again, I don't do on line downloads after a crash a while back..
I've seen all the 'famous' ones and the best of them is platoon, Never liked Full Metal Jacket.. Siege as you say puts across many of those feeling felt by all soldiers everywhere in any conflict, its likely awful and all you've got is the guy next to you.. It nails it..
But as you say, everyone has their fave..

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the shit out of it. R. Lee Ermey is awesome and so is his co-star. I think it would be an excellent candidate for a true to spirit remake with some of the goofy stuff corrected.

No worries mate, always liked R.Lee Ermey, he is perfect in that role.. Wings Hauser was the Co-star..
It would make a great remake as long as they 'got down and real' and not PC.. Of course in todays world its not good to to be seen to be shooting Gooks!

Tumbledown (1988) is about the closest I've ever got to seeing a film about the Falklands.
This is the PC time we live in.

I saw that mate, its a T.V. Drama about the trauma of the battle etc not the actual battle.. (Although it is shown briefly at the beginning at a T.V budget..).
I must agree, we live far to much in a PC time, I hate it..
Best Vietnam movie never seen is 'Siege Of Firebase Gloria', vastly better than all those famous ones mate.. Find it and enjoy..

Cheers, I'll look out for that.
I do remember another drama being made years ago called 'Warriors' set in Bosnia which was pretty good I think.
Also out on DVD is the 70's drama Spearhead.

I've seen Spearhead around, I'll look out for that myself..
Gloria is not out here mate.. You will only see it on Region one disc OR on line.. But its the best I've seen of its type..
Aside from We Were Soldiers.
