Description So, this morning I was bored in business studies class, so I decided to tune out; turn to the very back of my exercise book; draw the 8 head scale; and draw another figure. It's been a while seen I've drawn on paper so it was a nice experience, and easier too. I found that drawing on paper is much less messy than drawing straight on the tablet.

Either way, I drew a very good - by my standards - figure and I was ready to scan (well, not really. All I do is take a picture of it with my phone and copy it to my pc) the picture and go over it on Sai. Thing is, it barely passed line 6. I drew a fit midget, according to one of friends :-P

So I didn't really get to use all of the feedback I got - but looking over it I managed to solve some of the problems described anyway.

: I think I can safely say he's no longer top heavy. I hadn't realised he was at first. I thought the problem was with the hips (or lack thereof) but while they contributed to the problem, he really was just top heavy. So yeah, that was pretty helpful! Thanks!

I wish I had seen your comment when you first gave it!!! I had to go through like 10 references before I understood what you managed to get through in one comment
On the bright side, you were absolutely right!!!! Pects are now much closer to line 2 and femur placed as you described ^^

Anyway, hopefully this one will be better than the I would have gotten for the first

Hey a, sorry this is late, we've all been having technical issues and I missed this  when actually had a computer (using my mobile right now)

Anyhoos here we go:

Good points:
~good vertical proportions
~good shoulders and neck
~nice face and hair
~great improvement from last one :3

Points to improve:
~ The line work is a bit sketchy here, try to do this in the same manner as you did task 2 with smooth lines and no showing of overlap, we are trying to train you to draw in a way that looks polished in these tasks:3
~The armpits may need a little be of referencing as the way the lines are here make them look a little inorganic but of course I could be wrong
~The arm muscle structure looks a little off to me- I'm no expert at male anatomy but I would suggest a bit of careful referencing of the muscles in the arm so that you can define them better
~His abs also need some referencing, they look too square like and unnatural as the lines are incorrectly placed
~The hand is far too small,  despite what we think, the hands and feet are actually pretty big, they tend to span from the crotch line to a bit less than mid thigh - right now the hands look like they belo to a child instead.
~the reason why he is hovering is that his legs are a bit too short, the knee should be a little bit about the 6th line and it should be defined; knees play a vital role in anatomy and to leave the definition out would make them look incomplete
~His feet are also too small, the should be triangular, increasing in size towards the toes- feet tend to be bigger than the ankles (as is the case with wrists and hands)

I would grade this:

This is much better than last time is okay but please redo this task and if you need some good references just search male anatomy in DA and they have plenty of good ones there :3

Sweet, this looks much better! In manga, they usually tend to make the figures taller than real life, so I'd make his legs a bit longer- you could make his knees lower. I'd also make his arms a bit longer (the wrists) and his hands bigger.

Definitely a big improvement, I would only extend his forearms a bit (granted that I'm already on record as drawing forearms that are too long) to place the wrists at the same level as the crotch, and make his hands bigger. Hands and feet are much bigger than we think, particularly for males.

Regarding the legs, the only thing I'd suggest is to pull down the knees to that sixth line. It is very hard to get used to human figures being half legs at first, particularly when drawing the academic standard of eight-heads-tall, but it's a pretty good general rule. That accomplished, you can also lengthen the lower leg joints a bit so that he isn't hovering quite so much. It will also help the hovering thing if you move the heels down so that they are behind the toes, with the feet foreshortened somewhat. True, we'd still see the feet from a slightly high angle, but it would help to make it look like he stands on solid ground.

don't even want to think about perspective yet

Thank you! I was surprised I got it right, but when I was doing it on paper eveything was so much easier. I guess for anything really hard I'll have to sketch it on paper first.

The hands are pretty small - I knew that but somehow I failed to react to it. I guess I was pretty eager to submit!

Are you sure? Maybe it's just an illusion caused by the difference in size but the thighs always seemed shorter than the lower leg.

The joining of the shoulder and torso needs work too I think. This method works but it's not very realistic.

Anyway, thank you for the feedback! It was very helpful and gave me some food for thought (never used that saying before Did I use it right? )

Surprisingly enough, yes, the academic standard is for the knees to go at the sixth line, and for the upper and lower leg joints to be pretty much the same length. Granted we're talking about an adult man who's eight heads tall here. Very few people, even adults, are quite that tall. But I agree with this group's main premise of at least getting used to drawing figures at that height before we start trying out our own ideas about proportion.

Still, I bet most of your characters will wind up being at least 7-7.5 heads tall, at least the adults and older teenagers. There is room for some variation in proportions, but not as much as you might think at first.

And yes, you used the phrase "food for thought" correctly.
