This one looks so realistic! Not that the others don't, but this one has a sort of gentle and natural quality in its color levels that I think the others don't quite have as much. Beautiful!

I do not only find this photo a master piece, I believe you placed a watermark as it should be too! Awesome job Hougaard!

beautiful scene, and your treatment of the colour is really well done.
The tree is a vital part of the composition, my issue with it is that it appears to be blending in with another silhouette and the top hill behind it...I'd have liked to see it more defined against the mountain behind and the sky.

But it's still a lovely shot, great stuff

hougaard In reply to AndyMumford [2009-05-26 21:48:21 +0000 UTC]

true...but you can see that it's pre-pre sunrise light...alpenglow right? Trying to get detail from the tree would have been a nightmare. I have a 3x1 pano of the direct red light on the clouds

haha...excuse that misinterpratation. That was 1am this morning when I got home after one too many beers

AndyMumford In reply to hougaard [2009-05-26 22:06:35 +0000 UTC]

I don't necessarily mean bringing out detail in the tree...I don't mind silhouettes, I was wondering about a different composition, if you could have got closer and lower to the ground and got the bulk of the tree above the brow of the hill to separate it.

I'd like to see this pano

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

hougaard In reply to AndyMumford [2009-05-27 07:10:05 +0000 UTC]

I could...but I wasn't up for trying to battle to get detail into the tree, so I could have gotten closer and lower, but that would have made the slihouette much bigger against such a beautiful sky? I'm just trying to share my thought process here, I am regarding your criticism Just arguing why I did it this way.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

AndyMumford In reply to hougaard [2009-05-27 09:55:41 +0000 UTC]

I know you're not arguing mate...and you know that when I make criticisms I'm not saying "Oh you should've done this or that" because I completely respect the decisions you make in the field.....It's the same thing here really, I'm kind of just thinking out loud about how the silhouette of the tree could be cleaner. I had a similar thing here [link] where I wanted the red sky, but the more I moved around to get it in, the more I lost the silhouettes of the trees to the dark bakground and I couldn't get a shot that worked. Moving closer gave me the same problem that you stated - the silhouettes would have taken up too much of the sky.

Not sure what's the best way in these situations, silhouettes are really tricky

They are a pain in the ass. Like I've mentioned, if theres enough contrast then TK's luminosity masks can solve the problem.

This is gorgeous, and kind of makes me want to live in South Africa. I especially like the star; it took a minute to notice it, and now I think it's the best part of the shot. <3

PeteLatham [2009-05-26 18:46:34 +0000 UTC]

I like the tree. It makes the composition in my opinion. It's something to focus on and something that gives some tonal depth to the image.

I can't make my mind up about the star. It's not really big enough to be a compositional feature and made me think for a moment that I had a dead pixel on my laptop, but I'm not certain they're good enough reasons to remove it

Pete

hey
great shot with a beautiful sky.
but i have to say i find the tree a little distracting.
i would have tried to get the shot without it, whether this would have meant moving in closer or switching to a longer lens.
