After shooting sunrise in Deadvlei on this morning, I arrived at a flooded Tsaucheb river crossing where everyone was impatiently waiting for the water to subside. After about two hours of waiting I decided to head back to the 4x2 parking lot, have lunch and wait for afternoon light to arrive. I had my lunch, a nap, some coffee and I got back in the car and headed back to the dune 45 area. There were heavy rains fast approaching from the East, so I decided to scout these pans just outside the 4x2 parking lot for a bit. The sun broke through the clouds and illuminated the scene in warm afternoon light for about two minutes. I folded out the tripod, put the camera on and attached the filter system as fast as I could with hands shaking from excitement. I got this shot and as I tried to compose one closer to the ground the light was gone...

This shot has such an intense and dramatic atmosphere. I'm amazed that you managed to compose such a well balanced shot with so little time at hand. The lightest, dry ground on the right is balanced out by the intense orange of the sand dune to the left, and they bring light and life to an otherwise dark, kind of eerie image. I also love the fact that you can see the rain hitting the ground (at least that's what it looks like), and the sharpness and texture at the bottom of the shot.

wow, contrast! incredibly beautiful image hougaard, nice and sharp in the corners that zeiss...or at least a lot sharper than the 16-35, is this cropped?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hougaard In reply to sassaputzin [2011-11-08 20:31:36 +0000 UTC]

Not cropped. I bought it for the corner sharpness and it certainly performs there, but I miss that starburst and that extra 2mm.

sassaputzin In reply to hougaard [2011-11-09 14:45:47 +0000 UTC]

i must admit i do like the width of the 16mm and of course the starburst.........

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hougaard In reply to sassaputzin [2011-11-09 15:46:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but the Zeiss's corner sharpness is magnificent. At f/4 it owns the 16-35 at f/16. If you shoot into the sun the flare is a total of about two of those circles and one little stripe instead of the Canon's string of flare circles.

Ideally I'd have both. If I had to choose between a brand new copy of either I'd probably just make a random pick.

sassaputzin In reply to hougaard [2011-11-09 16:02:54 +0000 UTC]

i think its all over sharper, i look at andreas's work and his images just seem incredibly sharp, of course both would be nice, keep on istocking! fancy the new canon then?
