Description -------------------------------------------------------

NOTICE: NATE HAS MOVED TO A NEW DEVIANTART ACCOUNT.

My new username is NateSonOfSimp: [link]

I chose my original username poorly, and now the internet thinks my name is "Hugh." Though I hate to have to rebuild my watcher list from scratch, I've decided that this switch will only get more difficult the longer I wait.

Thanks in advance for coming along with me to my new home on DeviantArt!

First-pass color for page 3 of Project Waldo.

All of the pages for Project Waldo are drawn directly in Photoshop CS3 using a Cintiq tablet monitor. For line work I use default brush settings at 100% hardness (4-pixel width for thin lines, 7-pixel width for outlines).

For coloring, I use the popular Multifill and Flatten plugins ([link] ) to build selectable areas of color, and then I add new layers of color at different blend modes and opacities (this is a pretty random, haphazard, and slow process).

It usually takes me about a week to get a single page finished. Part of my reason for attempting this project is to learn ways to speed up my workflow.

Project Waldo will be released in 24-page installments beginning in 2010. For more information, and to sign up on a mailing list to be notified when the first issue comes out, visit the Project Waldo development blog: projectwaldo.blogspot.com.

Thanks very much, Georges!

Are you a professional animator? I'm just totally amazed by your control over the human form -- especially in stuff like "frames-fight." Really, really beautiful work.

I'm looking forward to seeing more greatness from you in the future!

Thank you.
I'm glad you liked my work.
Actually try to do comics.
Using only digital tools. (A wacom bamboo for now)
But I also do illustrations for games and rpg.

I was very excited when I found your gallery.
was the most incredible work I met this year.
I tried to find more jobs for its Google.

But I could not find a good amount.
I will be here waiting for news.

Thanks very much for stumbling across me!

There's some great range in your gallery. I think my favorite so far is "Infernal Blade" -- really unique face treatment and a very cool pose. Keep up the nice work!

hughferriss In reply to Radhikita [2009-10-28 06:07:58 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thanks! I sort of felt like they all looked a little too glum in the end, though. Shouldn't one of them have been smiling or whistling or something? If Pieter Bruegel had painted it, each character would have had a rich inner life...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Radhikita In reply to hughferriss [2009-10-28 13:12:45 +0000 UTC]

hahaha! it would have been funny to see a line of serious faces and in the midst of them all a guy looking totally cheerful, like there's nothing in the world he'd rather do than march all morning in a heavy armored suit. ah the optimist!
but i find that the serious faces are perhaps more accurate? i mean, sure it looks cool to us because they're wearing these wicked helmets and stuff, but for them it's just another day at work.
and in reality, not everyone has a rich inner life...

oh god that's a sad note to end on...

Merlin wears pink underwear!
that's better!

Your gallery is super-rad. Please post some more of your comics! I want to see more! I love your looseness (not of line, but of form)! I wish I had that.

You might enjoy Brandon Graham ([link] ). Actually, I'm a million percent sure you already know about him. His blog ([link] ) is awesome, too.

btw, I'll be posting more comics as soon as my classes ease off a bit.

I'm sorry, but you are not allowed to be as awesome as you are at age 17. Really, it's just totally unacceptable. Please devote your life to the study of dentistry or something, and then come back to this when you're 25. It's not fair.

Seriously, you're totally rad. Keep up the spectacular work!

hughferriss In reply to kippo94 [2009-10-14 14:43:23 +0000 UTC]

Yep! Sadly, I didn't get started as early as you did (you're that good at 14... not fair at all). Right now, I'm still trying to figure out panel placement, pacing, color, human expressions... how to make good stir-fry. So much to learn, so little time. Keep up the great work, by the way!

hughferriss In reply to azurespiritwolf [2009-10-14 14:46:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out how to work the detail into these without punishing the viewer. Too much this time?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

azurespiritwolf In reply to hughferriss [2009-10-15 08:38:44 +0000 UTC]

hmm not really, the lines are just right so the detail doesn't really lead the viewers eyes into the wrong direction (hope you understood that)

the details in this are working just fine if you ask me

how long does it typically take you to complete one of these stunning pages? And how do you do it? I'm amazed!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

hughferriss In reply to StudioHannahArt [2009-10-02 07:48:40 +0000 UTC]

It takes a pretty long time right now, though hopefully I'll speed up a little as I learn the ropes. These pages took about a week each to draw and color. They're all drawn in Photoshop using a Cintiq tablet monitor -- other than that, there aren't too many tricks. Just lots of hours. I talk a little bit more about some of this stuff at my blog: [link] .

By the way, I really like your illustrations. I can't believe you're still in school -- you are so much better than I was. Keep up the great work!

Haha, thanks so much! And thanks for taking the time to stop by my gallery.

I checked out your blog... "flatting"? What is this thing you have discovered? I'm going to have to check out that Photoshop plugin for flatting that you mentioned - I bet it saves loads of time!! This is exciting...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StudioHannahArt In reply to StudioHannahArt [2009-10-03 00:14:05 +0000 UTC]

I just downloaded the plugin and I can tell that I'm going to have to mess with this some more to get it to work properly, but by golly it's cool. I'm trying to develop a comic myself and this would really be useful. Thanks for sharing!

Wow, that is so much detail! You have such a good eye! I love how you even captured the expressions of the soldier's faces under their helmets: each soldier's eyes are so expressive!

You have great color choices, and it is just wonderful overall. It is definitely DD worthy.
